Title: ? about gear reduction kits
Post by: Crazymays77 on June 25, 2008, 07:57:17 PM
ok I have a 95 geo tracker. I found a site that sells gear reduction kits for my t-case. my options are 4.24:1, 4.9:1 and 6.4:1. I dont know which one to get. I dont rock crawl with it so i dont see getting the 6.4:1 but I would like your opinion on what you all think i should get... thanks

I just found another site that has a 5.14:1 reduction kit.

what is your current ratio?

tires? and what are ya usin it for? just trails?

i would guess the 4.9, somewhere right in the middle? or go all our and get the 6.4

I just put a 6.5:1 t-case from  http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/suzukimain.htm in my sami. I know there are not alot of rocks to climb around here but for climbing and decending steep hills this is the way to go. When I come down steep hills I just put it in 1st or second gear and 4low and let it idle down I don't even need to touch my brake at all. Climbing hills is a breeze no running starts to make it up a hill needed. Heavier mounts are a must, because of the torque load the lower gears put out. For instance I have reved mine to 2000rpm in 4low and dumped the clutch and it felt like the frame was twisting. Yes I have at times pulled the front tire's of the ground with only 95 horses.  I have 373:1 axle gears with 35" swampers. High range in this t-case is 1.2:1 so it makes up for the difference because of the bigger tires. I think this t-case is the best mod I have done to my sami. I would recomend it to anyone who wants to climb obstacles without too much speed and taking the risk of crashing.

I dont know what the stock ratio is. i play in the mud with it and since i put the ltb's on it i cant get over 3000 rpms and would like to be able to turn  the tires better. i was thinking of the 5.14 gears myself. same price as the 4.9 gears.

if your never going to run tires bigger than the ltb's which to me look like 31" then the 4.24 or 4.9 would be best. anything lower would be over kill. My 6.5 in 4 low and 1st gear at 4000 rpm moves about 3mph

well I put the gears in today. I'm glad they didnt have any lower gears. the 4.24:1 is low enough for me. I played in the yard and in 4l 1st gear i get to 3000 rpms and its just crawling. we'll see how it does at the mounds sunday if i can go.

yeah i saw you out there. trackers not gonna make it much longer the motor is pretty much shot. i changed the oil today and theres a lot of metal in the oil. i put thicker oil in it and its sounds better but i think this weekend will be its last. I have to rebuilt another motor i have and try it again.
