Title: valve sping
Post by: KORNBREAD on July 21, 2008, 02:14:25 AM
just real quick if i put new head gaskets on my 355 after i put the heads back on do i need to readjust the valves?? i never had to before but someone told me that anytime you take a head off you have to readjust the valve springs?? i always just put the heads back on,then the pushrods and rockers back in tourqed everything back to spec and slaped the valve covers on and was good to go. never had any problems. but someone just told me that when i losen the rockers it throws the springs off and i have to relash them before i call it a done job?? please help cause the motor i have i really dont want to screw it up. if i do have to relash them than i must have always gotten lucky with the last few motors i did lol. please help.

355 chevy?  I don't see how you are getting all the head bolts out if you don't loosen up the rocker arms.  I don't do the running lash adjustment any more.  I adjust the valves with the intake off so I can see the lifters.  I tighten the rocker arm until I see the lifter plunger just start to move then I go one full turn after that.

i take the rockers and turn them to get to the bolts when i take the head off. i tourq the head bolts down before i put the rods, and rockers back on lol  i was just unsure about the springs needing to be re set.

I think you should adjust the rockers imo.  Too loose: noisy.  Too tight: valve burnage.

def on a chevy you have to lash the valves or it might not run tighten the rocker arm while spinning the pushrod with your finger till the instant you cant spin the pushrod with your fingers and got another 1/2 to full turn tighter thats how i was taught to cold lash

I was taught the same way.. and bent many a valve.   I don't use that technique anymore.

find out what cam u have look up the lash for it, then use a feeler guage and adjust each valve (intake/exhaust) in firing order. make sure u adjust the intake valve when the exhaust just opens, and exhaust when the intake just closes. this is cold lash.(motor is cold) most cams manufacturers provide hot and cold lash numbers.good luck
