im trying to sell my jeep but it dont look like there are many people intrested so i guess im just goona fix it and turn it into a DD. its an 88 jeep cherokee with a carburated 2.8. the tranny is slipping so i need to put another one in there. my question is would i be further ahead to find a 4.0 drive train and put that all in there or just replace the tranny on the 2.8?
next question is if i decide to just replace the tranny, how do i go about finding out what transmission it has? i know nothing about these jeeps so im pretty lost here, any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.
well im pretty sure your gonna be in for a long haul by swaping to the 4.0. mounts.wiring harnes,computer,most likely tranny and mont,again list keeps growing. id just call any place that dose auto repair or any parts store should be able to tell you what tranny ya got. id just do a quick tranny swap and be done with it.
ya, i know the wiring and all that will be a real nightmare but i think that the performance would pay off, however, ill be that the 2.8 will get me amazing gas mileage so ill probably end up staying with that...

ya, motors arent that great, like to not have oil pressure.... if it is an 88, it shouldnt have the 2.8, that was the big motor in the pre '87 models

id rather have that motor w/ a five speed behind it. from what ive heard/read the jeep 2.8l's were the 'leftovers' from GM, and that they werent really too good from the factory. my buddy smoked his on 23 comin back down from the mounds
well from what i understand, the guy that i bought it from blew the 5 speed out and put an automatic in it. my question, is what automatic tranny will fit in there? im going to keep the 2.8 till it goes, then ill worry about putting a 4.0 in it.
