there are also 400s with 2 plugs also 400 alway have the harmanic balancer with a notch like 2in long on it because it is eternal balanced
depends on the year
400s have 3 cast plugs on each side of the block, 350/305 have 2
81 up sbc's are on the right hand side

you should ALWAYS refer to right and left as if your setting in the drivers seat facing forward
standing in front
ahh i c... nobody specified, mines on left standing infront of truck... on right sitting in driver seat. anyways... thats a 90' 305.
my 400 is on the left :-\
can he get a block casting # off of it? it would be alot easier to google the casting # instead of having to guess at it

All 400s have 3 plugs. That is the only way they can get the sand out of the casting between the two center cylinders since they touch each other and coolant can't go all the way around them. They are Siamese design block.
Thats why they have over heating issues.
My 400 sbc only has two plugs. It is a 6.0 out of a 79 3/4 ton chevy p/u
I've got a two plug block with the 400 balancer and flywheel--its out of a 78 truck-but the pistons aren't 400 bore meaning she's a stroker
well I guess I gotta pull the heads and see wtf I have because the engine was rebuilt by the last owner and has pretty low miles onit. but anyway thats about what I have.
my motor is a 98 vortec 350 and its on the right on mine
a 6.0 is a 364ci. awesome motor!!!!! put a set of L-92 heads on it, they run 500hp +
