Almost the only real difference is that the 4l60e is electronicly controlled.  You will have to have  a way to hook up the kickdown cable from the 700 and a way to controll the lockup converter (you can get kit's for that) other than those things they are the same, you will even be able to use the same tcase and crossmember.

yes you can put a 700 in there direct bolt in. you will need a lock up harness if you want to drive it on the street. having a lockup converter is better for efficiency and will also reduce the heat in the trans during part throttle operation and cruising. simple 4 wire hookup with a switch. 700r's can use lockup in 2nd through 4th gears.

yes it is direct bolt in... why change it if it aint bad ???

you can run without the lockup if you dont run on the E way, for cruisin around town it should be alright without it.

also shifters might be different, altho i dont think they used the cable shifters until 97~(not exaclty sure)

look on the driver side of the trans and see if it has a big black plastic neutral saftey switch that bolts to the trans. if it DOES NOT have this, should be very simple to swap over.
