Title: Transmission Help!
Post by: mudslayer2008 on October 04, 2008, 09:41:16 PM
I have a "87" S-10 w/ 2.8 and 700R4 (I think) I had to replace the u joints on the driveshaft due to viberation. Anyway when I pulled the yoke out of the trans the fluid smelled a little burnt so when I was done with the u-joints I drove it around to 1 see if that cured my problem (kindda) and 2 to get the trans at operating temp to check the trans fluid when I did it was a little brownish red and smelled a little burnt.

My question is can I get by with replacing just the filter and fluid for now. I know I'll eventully have to rebuild the trans but can't afford to right now. if I do replace the filter and fluid would it hold up until I can rebuild it?

Any input would be helpful.  Thanks  Gary

next time ya got yer rear driveshaft out.. try wiggling the output shaft of the trans.. it shouldnt move much.. if it moves alot... shes well worn out...

fluid and filter is only a bandaid..... try running some lucus trans, it helps out alot, but it will get you by for a little while

Fluid/ filter swap and whatever additives you can find. You're on a downhill right now but if you drive it real nice you may get some more time out of it. The brown burnt characterstics are all the clutch material that is supposed to be on the clutch discs.

Thanks for the advice I plan on putting something in it weather it be lucus, prolong, slick 50, transmedic, or trans fix I dont know witch one is the best to use ??? I have heard alot of good things about lucus and prolong but never used either one of them.Lucus is cheaper but you usually get what you pay for.   I dont know any input ???

Eroq said it, use Lucas for now with fresh fluid and filter, its a bandaid but it will get ya by for a while!  I've done this many times in my figure 8 cars that I thought were toasted and finished the season .

Before you change the fluid...
How many miles are on the trans??
when, if ever was the last fluid/filter change..

If...
there are high miles, and the fluid/filter have not been changed in a very long time..
best practice is to leave it alone,, fluid and clutches are abrasive ,, changing the fluid will "wash" the abrasives out of your clutch paks..

I've done this before.. changed the fluid and filter only to have the trans quit within a thousand miles..

2000silverado how much $$ for the trans and will it bolt to a 2.8 V6?

I kinda need to keep this running as it is my dd. I do have another truck but it cost to much to Keep driving it.
