Heres the deal, in July I bought a regular Cab Long bed 4x4 1982 Chevy k10. Has a CARBURATED 305 motor and a 350 trans. I want to have overdrive because I do more highway driving than anything. I was thinking either a 700r4.
But if I got one off a fuel injected motor in would mess up the shifting. Right??
So is a 700r4 from a efi motor vacum shifted through 1st,2nd, and 3rd gear and then electric shifted to overdrive or what? Could I just hook a switch up like 2nd gen dodges have for the over drive or is there a better way to do this??
Thanks a Bunch for any help guys.

OK here's the scoope. A 4l60e is controled electronicly you don't want one of those, you would need a stand alone computer to control the tranny. A 700r4 (4l60) is all controled mechanicly other than the lock up converter, so that is what you want.
You can put the 700 in and all you will need to get the converter to lock up like it's supposed to is a lock up kit, you can get them from places like Jeg's and summit. I have a Jegs catalog here in front of me and the part # is 890-376600 and it's 79.99. you don't nessicarily have to get this kit but at least you can see what I'm talking about.
Yeah what he said. He knows what he's talking about.
GREAT thanks a bunch. What will happen if I dont put the lock up kit on it? LSI what up about my driveshaft? Will it need any mods due to a longer or shorter transmission?

If you don't install the lockup kit you will run afew extra 300-500 rpm and cause extra heat in the tranny, You would probobly be fine but If it was my DD I'd spend the money and make sure, even if you don't do it right away, spend the money.
on the length the 700 is about 3" or so longer than the 350 and the drivesaft's I guess that depends a lot on what tcase you have. It it's got a 208 you may be alright but if it's got a 203 your probobly gonna have problems.
I dont see why any 1982-1992 4x4 700r4 wont work on your truck...........from either carb or EFI......., and those trannys are easy to find. Somebody on WGM has one for sale on here.
Not sure on your torque converter deal.............but any trans you should get will probably have the conveter on it, unless you plan on having the trans rebuilt with an aftermarket converter.
Run a good qaulity trans cooler......that should solve any heat issues you might have.

Well my truck has a 208 t-case on it now. But I have been told that it wont work on the 700r4 because the input splines on the t-case are different? I also have a np241 27 spline that came from a fuel injected suburban with a 700r4? What about that with drvieshafts and stuff?
Both a 350 turbo and 700r4 have 27 spline shafts............so your Np208......or 241 will bolt up to it. Both those T-case's run the flat (saginaw style) front flange, and have a slip yoke rear tailshaft, so your front driveshaft will work.
The rear driveshaft is where you might have trouble...........as Mudbuster said..........the 700r4 is a little longer than a 350 turbo.......so your rear driveshaft might end up being too long..........but.....if you have a small suspension lift kit on the truck.......that might solve the problem. Or you could have the rear shaft shortened.

Ok thats good news. But I have a small 3 inch suspension lift on the
truck now. BUt wouldnt the front driveshaft be to short??
The front shaft will stretch out 3 or 4 inches , but it should work, I ran a 4 inch lift on my 84 chevy and both stock driveshafts worked...........but they were stretched out to max......but remember that was a 4 inch lift.
i had a 6 inch lift with stock front driveshaft.. it was maxed out.
Anyone no what the price is to get the front shaft lengthed? I am gonna to a 8 inch lift on this truck soon. So the rear shaft will probably work with a axle shim. But the front will need to be longer right? Any price?
You can always lower your T-case cross member by running a 1 inch spacer, i wouldnt go more than that because your start tilting the motor.......might hit fan shroud....................but this is one way to help keep your stock driveshafts.
i got a 305, 700r4, 208, out of an 85 if ur interested a.j. let me know

Well I am going to do a electric fan with no shroud or clutch fan. So I would be able to do that qith no problems right? Do you basically just put a spacer between the cross member and the frame to drop it down?

I might be interested in the 700r4. But not right away. I wanna get my motor built first.
How much would you want though?
the only way the 208 t case wont work for you in this situation is if it was a 208 that was attached to a sm465 trans. the output shaft on the sm465 trans had a 32 spline shaft meaning the input shaft on the 208 also has 32 splines, but that is a simple part to swap out. theres nothing to a 208 t case. took me about 20 min to split 2 transfer cases and swap out the part to make my 32 splined 208 become a 27spline so it would work with my 350 trans.
