Title: big block in a half ton?
Post by: Kodiak450r on October 17, 2008, 02:35:24 AM
how hard would it be to stuff a 454 in a 1990 1500 4x4 with a 5 speed? do i need different motor mounts, exhaust, oil pan, anything else? engine came out of 88 suburban and has those manifolds on it already. dunno if it'd work.

suburban manifolds are different because of the frame difference, if you mean they have the 88-98 frame style manifolds then you're good need a 454 y pipe if not running custom exhaust... everything else bolts up...

If it has the NV 3500 you might kill it pretty fast highly recommend an NV4500 or sm465

takes different radiator and fan shroud...

Ever hear of the 454 "SS" pickup??? Factory 454 in a half ton 2wd......they wern't powerhouses though they were meant for pulling.

I remember when those trucks came out.  I've seen a bunch of stock ones running at Milan Dragway (in the early 90's).  They typicaly ran in the low to mid 17's in the quarter.

Those Original early 90's  SS 454 Shortbox trucks had a 6 lug 14 bolt rear axle also...........alittle extra strenght since that 454 would grenade a 10 bolt.

I've seen guys build CLONE SS trucks out of regular short box trucks...........and that 10 bolt rear axle is a dead giveaway that the truck isnt original.

As mentioned...........the GETRAG 5 speed is a junk tranny and not up to big block power..........a cast Iron NV4500 would be nice (if you can afford it)...............but the SM465 would be alot cheaper, and it should bolt right in..........the SM465 was offered in the 1988 body style chevy trucks, and they used it till 91/92.............until the NV4500 came out, and that replaced the Sm465.

If you go with the Sm465.........make sure you get one from a 81-up chevy..........because it will have the longer rear outputshaft and will work with the NP208..........and the Np241 which is behind your Getrag 5 spd now. The pre 1980 SM465 models have the short stubby 10 spline shaft and wont work with the Np208 or 241 without replacing the whole rear output shaft.

this truck comes with the NV4500 tranny which is the main reason i want it. and i believe since it's a Z-71 it just might have the bigger rear as well. guy wants 1500 for the truck with no engine(came with a 350) i'm gonna see if he'll take 1000 for it.
