just talked to someone whos been workin on sbc's for longer than i been alive.. he said 305 and 350 the same, just use balancer that came with the engine and timing cover that came with it and it will be fine.

vortec heads set up for TBI, originally....

center bolt heads are vortecs, just in 96 when they changed fuel delivery they transferred the head name to the engine itself

sorry to say but your wrong. there are diffrences between 87-95 pre-vortec heads and 96-2000 true vortec heads. not just the mounting for the intake. the intake ports are diffrent volumes, 87-95 have a big ramp cast into it for a swirling effect which is y 87-95 heads are reffered to as swirl port heads. all 87-95 TBI cars and trucks has those style heads. vortec heads don't have that ramp which is y they outflow swirlports by alot.

as for the crankshaft issue. you can't run a 305 crank in a 350 unless you balance the entire rotating assembly from balancer to flywheel/flexplate as 87-up are externally balanced engines. the engine will be far enough off in balance to give you a destructive vibration. the harmonic balancer will not be able to correct it

you will think there is an earthquake going on if you don't balance that crank and just slap it in.

i believe also the vortec heads dont have the water passage in between the intake ports too
