Title: T-case questions NP 205 vs Dana 24
Post by: STEUERDUKES on November 03, 2008, 12:57:52 AM
Ok,  I need to use a divorced T-case for my new bogger project.  I have a divorced Dana 24  and I can get a divorced NP 205.  I know the NP 205's are great and I've herd Dana 24's are good also.  I do know that they are bolth cast iron and gear to gear.  I need some sugestions on whitch case to use and why, any pro's and con's or specs of either case would help me out tons.  Thank again fellow Got Mudders!!! Im not sure what the 24 originaly came out of, my friend  had it in a 73 ford.  Im not even 100% that it is a Dana 24 but that is what I was told.  I will try to research it and post some pics of it tomarow.  Any help on this issue would be great!  Thanks again

FORD..........used the Dana 21.........in the late 60's and early 70's as a divorce mounted transfer case in F100's..... and possibly F250's....not 100% sure.

I do know this............I've seen some early 70's models with this transfer case..............and they DO NOT HAVE LOW RANGE...........they only have 2wd, 4Hi, N.   Those that I have seen were behind stick trannys (NP435) and they had a granny gear.........which sort of made up for not having 4 low.

If this transfer case has the shifting lever with it and original knob..............look at the knob (if it has shift pattern on it)..........to see if it does have 4 low. If there is no knob...........then run the lever through all the ranges, that will also tell you if it has only 4 hi.

To my knowledge.........the dana 300 didnt come out until 1980, and it was offered in CJ  Jeeps..........and in International Scouts/pickups (1980 was the last year the Scout was built)

The T-case does have 2hi, 4hi, and 4low.  I just picked it up last nite.  I will post a few pics of it later today and hopefully ID it.  Im just a little worryed about fabbing it in my frame and not being able too replace it or fix it if it ever gives me problems.  Thanks agian for the help!

I'd say go with the 205 it's heavier but it's also stronger, and if you do ever break it they are easier to find. the 300's are good but if your putting it in a fullsize rig with a decent motor it will give up at some point. ==2cents

OK, I know 100% for sure that the T-case I have is a Dana 24.  I can still go get the NP205, so my questionn is whitch T-case is better and why?  I want to only mount 1 case, 1 time and then rebuild or fix it when needed.  Once again, any input woluld be great!!!  Thanx again!!!

The NP205 is nearly indestructable, they are easy to get replacement parts for or a complete spare case, they can easily be twin sticked, the output shafts are most likely a fine spline which is a good thing, their low range sucks though 1.96:1

From what I can find on a Dana 24 is they came out of things in the 1960s. In that time frame you are most likely to have coarse spline output shafts. This is weaker than the finer splined shafts found in the NP205, also output yokes are going to be harder to find if you need replacements.

I personally would use the NP205 for the reasons I have listed above. Just my 2 cents worth, hope this helps you.

There was no mention of what size of vehicle this 1973 ( dana ) T-case came out of.............was it out of a fullsize Ford truck? or a 66-77 bronco?..............If was out of a fullsize truck then it probably is the dana/spicer model 24.......................but if it was out of a small bronco then it'd most likely be a dana 20.

All Dana built transfer cases came from the factory with a red & silver metal ID tag which will tell you the model number (20, 21, 24).

You should be able to Twin stick a dana 24 also.........if there's 2 rods coming out from the front of the T-case then it can be twin sticked........if you even wanted that.

LOW RANGE.................most dana built T-cases have alittle lower low range than the NP205............in fact............if your dana 24 still has the ID tag on it.............it might tell you the low range ratio.

As other guys have mentioned, the dana 24 is a smaller gear driven T-case than the NP205 is, and under heavy horse power it could fail......but any drivetrain part can break...........so if you have the dana 24  already........then I say run it. Its divorce mounted..............so you can run what ever tranny you want behind it.
