Title: Real cheap heat!
Post by: Disturban on December 26, 2008, 07:53:04 PM
I got a kerosene heater to help warm up my house to keep the heat bills down and after doing some homework I found people are making biodiesel and running it in their heaters. So doing some more homework I am now going to make my own small batches of biodiesel. Price...used french fry oil is free. You need 200 ml of methanol for every 1 liter of FF Oil, Methanol is under $5 a gallon and you also need a box of Lye about $3. A gallon has 3785.6 mL so I should be able to make about 4.7 gallons for under $8. I also learned that the Sulphur emissions from biodiesel are at least 80% lower than low sulphur fossil diesel making it much cleaner to burn in my house. A gallon of kerosene will burn for 16 hours in my heater...now you do the math  ;D

Any thoughts or advice on this?

DO IT, and let us know what kinds of equipment we need to make our own!! let us know how the heater does to with it!

The only equipment you need is a mixer and a container and a hot plate or something to heat your oil up to 130 degrees. From what I gather you mix the right amount of lye with the right amount of  methanol, heat your prepared amount of oil to 130 them combine all ingredients and keep them mixing for about 3 hours. You can use a blender to make small batches. How ever I am going to use a paint mixer attachment on a power drill and make a bracket to hold it. Anyway after it has mixed for the right amount of time you just let it set for 24 hours and all the by products sink to the bottom and the biodiesel is at the top. Then you just pump it out  ;D

I thought about making biodiesel a while back when gas was so much and running it in a VW Rabbit diesel...those things get like 54mpg.

Anyway I will have a batch made up before monday and give update on how it goes.

Got all the stuff on the list already...We use the kerosene heater to heat the upstairs at night and turn the furnace all the way down. The furnace will still kick on about twice an hr and bring fresh air upstairs. I am awake all night long and would never recommend sleeping with a kerosene heater running. Our new house we got last year is an old farm house 2150sq feet and we seen $400 gas bills trying to keep it warm...not this year!
