so I am going to have to buy a new truck soon well used lol. I'm looking at various chevys and fords, a few dodges maybe. Anyways, eBay is where i'm going to buy from. Now who here likes autos vs mannys and vice versa? for what reasons? and what problems in mudding specifically do autos vs mannys have? I'm looking at like water in trans type issues?
How new of a truck are you going to buy?.........that might help us.
If you are talking old trucks, then for GM manual transmissions........you cant beat the SM420 or Sm465.......7.05, or 6.54 1st gear.....not hard trannys to find. Cast Iron housing, nearly indestructable!

thats why i'm in my current situation. Right now I'm going to be getting something temporary. Maybe a daily driver, but in about a month or two i'm gonna use ebay and buy most likely a 67 4wd chevy.
manual
love my stick sift , git lots of tourq in first gear
kind of a pain if you drive in traffic alot
i love my "indestructable"sm465 stick lol
people who complain about driving a stick are just lazy
i think it gives me way better control in the mud also
find a 4 speed w/ creeper with a 205 behind it :)
I love my autos wont go no other way..... sticks suck in the mud once you hit the clutch the tires stop and your done.... auto, rpms hit max shift and the wheel speed goes up no clutch!!!

X2...a stick sucks as a DD too. They are fun at first but it gets old real quick pushing in that clutch all the time.

That's why I run autos in a bogger and sticks on the street. Autos will suck out your gas mileage in a DD.
I like automatics for both dd and bogger

gotta shift FAST!! lol
shouldnt this be in the tech area?
auto!!! gives me time to hang on to the girl LOL
in the mud I like auto's especially if they've got a manual valve body ;) ;) ;) but I like banging gears with a stick on the street but unless you've got a diesel I think an auto tow's better
Auto in mud, Stick in tow rig. ==dunno
pretty much if you get a dodge and want the trans to last get a manual. Chevy either one depending on what your doing, ford the same.... i'd just stay away from dodge autos.

I'm getting a Honda Del Sol within the week. Stick shift of course. Car is fast and fun. Takes on ramps at about oh 90mph. Anyways, stick shifts are fun. I want to find either a 292 or if possible a big block 305 v6. anyone have experience with those big block v6s?
(( I'm getting a Honda Del Sol within the week. Stick shift of course. ))
Dude.......thats not a truck.....lol
A Chevy 292 straight 6 will give you alot of torque!!.......they are a good long lasting motor. My brother put one in a 76 3/4 ton he had, it wasnt a speed machine........but coupled to a Sm465 and 4:10 gears.......the truck had alot pulling power!!.
Remember..........the 305 V6 hasnt been used in 40 years..............and I personally dont know anyone whos ever used one.
I know it's not a truck. But I need a vehicle badly, and thats what I can get lol. And it's pretty fun to drive. Not to mention it get's like 40mpg if not better, especially if gas goes back up thats a big deal. But back to the subject. Now, this will be my first manual car. But I'm going to get a manual truck i've decided. So what kind of upkeep does a manny need vs an automatic. Oh, and water in trans, is it a big problem with manuals or less of a problem?
well if your ganna hang out in the water that much your ganna have to worry about other things too like the front and rear diff's getting water in them.
but to answer your question MANUAL they are my fav. thats all i have been driving since about 5years ago when i got my first stick and i dont get sick of em even in heavy traffic... once you get used to it you dont even notice what your doing anymore and it becomes second nature.
and for a mudder a stick much more control, especially in a trail rig.
in world were we have traction control, stability control, ABS, and someother stupid controller, if i always have a stick then i will always know that i will have at least one thing under my control loll
I got a manual it helps me keep my speed in check in the city.
My cavalier and my silverado are both auto. But my sami is a stick. I get around great with the manual even in the mud, better control, especially on the trails. I thought about putting an auto in my sami, but 1st is a lot lower in the manual. I guess it would not matter since I have 6.5:1 in my t-case, but I would need a 2wd tracker tranny because the sami case is divorced.
