Title: 203 question
Post by: 88chevy on January 30, 2009, 06:09:11 PM
I have a 1987 chevy with a 203 and its got the part time conversion kit in it.  Well i only have one shifter for high and low, for 2 wheel and 4 wheel i have to crawl underneath and move a lever.  My question is am i supposed to have two different shifters in the cab or just one?

are you sure the shifter is working right?  I dont think you could pput the wrong one on....   but if its not hooked up right or out of adjustment that could be your problem..... I have had a few trucks with 203s and I have aways had a shifter problem with a parttime kit... (they pop out of gear) but I found a few different way to stop it...

it did but the guy a bought it from blew the tranny so instead of getting it rebuilt he pulled the tranny and transfer case out and put a 203 and a new tranny in

if it were me I would get rid of the 203 and go back to a 208 or 205..... 203s are junk  only good for scrap! (I have scraped 6-8 of them)

Right there is your problem I'm sure...........  Did he change the shifter also or did he use the one that was ment for the 208 ??? The 208 shifter mounts to the floor of the truck and only has one Rod hooked to it.  The 203 shifter mounts to the end of the tranny and has 2 arms on the bottom of it for the rods to hook too.

I'd be willing to bet he just made the 203 linkage hook up to the 208 shifter so he wouldn't have to deal with the 203 shifter.

As betterbeaters said the 203 shifters are natorious for not working right they need to be lubed constantly...
