Ditto...but I guess they are raising the taxes on us also. They keep that p00 up and I will start to grow my own tobacco!
i dont wanna offend anyone, but its funny to me that people are angry about this. many people die from smoking every year, look at it as motivation to live a few extra years. for all them people that continue to keep smoking, look at it as a way to spend all that money that you would make/get in the years you would have lived! just my $0.02

Thats all good and dandy until they start to raise taxes on things you enjoy in life...I for one like smoking and dont feel I should have to pay more because other people think it is bad for you or they need more money to bail this state or country out of the mess we are in.
PS: For all my fellow smokers we might have to avoid the tax by getting our cigarettes and tobacco here http://www.esmokes.com/esmokes_sitemap.asp

sorry didnt edit last post, but you say people die from smoking every year. how about FDA approved drugs that kill people? you cant do ANYTHING without the risk of dying, yes smoking increases the chances, but no more than the moron in a hurry to get to work on cell phone, go to gary in., breath in some of that air, it'll cut years off your life, sorry just rubbed me the wrong way to each their own.
For those roll your own smoker, I'm sorry to say you'll be hit the hardest. Loose tobacco tax will go from around $1.00/lbs to close to $25.00 lbs. No I did not mis-type the decimal. Here's an excerpt;
"To All Custom Blends Customers:
House Bill HR2 (Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009) has been introduced in the United States
House of Representatives, and sadly, once again, tobacco users are in the crosshairs. Now, generally speaking, we have no problem with helping to provide medical coverage for uninsured children - our main issue concerns the funding changes in this bill, because removing "Pay as you Go" knocks a funding hole in this program that the additional taxes on smokers can't fill. And the unfair tax increases for roll your own smokers are heavy - our customers should read on, this will unfortunately affect you. Some Details of this Federal Tax Hike: Effective date April 1, 2009
* The prepackaged cigarette tax rate goes from $.39 per pack to $1.00 per pack. This is in addition to your respective State taxes.
* Snuff taxes go from $.585 per pound to $1.50 per pound.
* The tax on pipe tobacco is raised from $1.0969 per pound to $2.8126 per pound.
* The tax on Roll Your Own tobacco will increase from $1.0969 per pound to $24.62 per pound (yes, $24.62 per pound.)
Read this for more info: http://www.smokersnews.com/cigarette-taxes/294/obama-signs-federal-cigarette-tax-hike/
Additionally the definition of Roll Your Own has been "expanded" to include cigar wrappers such as "blunt wraps". The tax change to small cigars (such as Deans Flavored cigars in the 20 packs) will be phased in over a five year period."
glad i dont smoke this p00 is getting crazy i think if they raise the cig tax they should raise the alcohole tax too but thats just me
This is a tax on the lower and middle classes. Also a poorly conceived tax that is doomed to fail. They say the tax is to fund childrens health care, so they tax smokers, they also hope the tax will cause smokers to quit. What if that happens? Smokers quit, then where does the tax revenue come from to fund childrens health care? Just like the gas tax is used to fund the highway system, when gas consumption plummeted, the highway system was starved for money. If they want new tax revenues, I say legalize certain drugs such as marijuana, tax it, regulate it. There would be a fortunate byproduct of non violent offenders in jail would no longer become a tax burden. Instant cash relief, and a new source of revenue.

I agree that there idea on raising the cig.tax will fail, alot of people will quit smokeing, there is some quit smokeing hotline that was giveing away things like patches and gum , giveing it away, they advertised it and had to shut it down in three days because they ran out , said they recieved like 60.000 calls, people are gonna quit, I also agree legalizeing marijuana would be a possitive to this countries money problem but I feel they dont because they(the government) know they cant controll it, cigarettes are controlled because the chemicals in the cigarettes the added chemicals that make them so addictive can be controlled, you couldnt grow tobacco and expect it to satisfy the addiction, but marijuana already has what we want and if it was legal people would grow it, I would hell ya, and than the government wouldnt make any money off it, thats why it is illegal,
our government sucks, they controll us all in one way or another like it or not.

There would be a lot of people who grow, but there would also be a significant amount of people who won't or can't. People can grow potatoes, but you can still buy them in the store. I agree with your assessment that the Govt. controls us, but the real reason Mj is illegal has to do with racism and protectionism. Read this http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/87272/the_real_reason_cannabis_is_illegal.html?singlepage=true&cat=47 Lobbyists of days past made the public fear mj, that it was an evil drug that only mexicans and blacks used to commit crimes and seduce white women. MJ,Hemp can all be used for a number of positive things that would cut into the profits of big business and big pharma. We need to end this practice of the Government protecting big business at the expense of the people. Check out http://www.campaignforliberty.com/ for ways each of us can help.
