i believe you get into race gas at 10 to 1 so stay below that. and get a set of good heads Terry rosebush sells dart heads for 399 a pair for bare casting any one they make. cast iron ones anyways.

10    or  10.5  to 1    before  you need  racing fuel.

spend you money on your heads  that where the  power at.

look for TPI camaro heads. they are typically cheap but give good gains if you have someone port them. i'm running TPI 305 heads on my 355 and with a mild roller cam i'm above 325 HP and it runs on 87 octane with 9.5:1 compression ratio.

change your intake out to a performer intake, you can get whole kits from edelbrock...intake, cam , lifters, ect..... and i wouldnt go to radical of a lift, and a 650 carb would be plenty

I told it was rebuilt four years ago and only has 30,000 onit but thats about all know. it did run when I pulled it from the truck in Oct. 08.

Not sure  if I'm going to sell it or not don't even know what it's worth.

When it was running didn't smoke or knock at all.

Vortec heads work well and are fairly cheap and available, if you can afford it Darts are nice too,  if it were mine I'd stick with Cast Iron instead of Aluminum if its a bogger, Cast will hold up better to the heat.

I would put some heads on the 400, as they say no replacement for displacement.

it dont do any good to put a topend to gether to run 8000 if you dont put the money in the lower end to hold it but you cant tell any one that the dont seem to care and everone seams to get vortecs mixed up with juck tbi head they are not the same just cause they have center bolt valve cover dont mean that they are vortecs and if you whant a good stock head look for a set of fast burn heads they are the p00 you will have a 100 more ponies they are the one with the four corner bolts that hold the intake on  none in the center you can have it decked for compresion you dont have to run race gas untill high 11to 1people  for get pump gas comes in three grades
