How do you like these lanes at stores that you have to scan the items yourself and then feed the money into a machine? I myself hate them! I think that if I have to do the cashiers job I should get the cashiers pay as a deduction off my bill!
i like it , usually i have only few things so thats a express for me walk in and walk out .. than staying in line

Thing is everyone is using these check outs and I find myself waiting in line to check myself out. I can see in the near future there will probably be only one cashier for the whole store and the rest will be check yourself out lines. I just think that a paying customer should be served by an employee and not have to do the employee's job. What comes next? Stocking their shelves for them? Cutting our own meat? Growing our own veggies? Where did the friendly service with a smile go? I enjoy interacting with people!
Here are some more reasons why they suck.
# Most people take longer in self checkouts to complete their transactions than in cashier-operated lanes. It?s true. I?ve timed it while waiting in long supermarket lines, and you can make the same observations for yourself. But why are self checker outers slower? The rest of the reasons explain why, starting with?
# Customer technical incompetence. I?m sure I could find a nicer label to assign to the idiots who think they know what they?re doing in a self checkout lane. All too often, Grandma No-Computer pulls her cart into a self checkout lane and brings it to a screeching halt as she tries to figure out what to do with her bag of oranges. Even computer-minded folks often fumble around in self checkouts, but more often that?s due to?
# Grossly poor self checkout designs. Cashier-manned checkout lanes have an efficient order to them: you place your items on a conveyor belt while waiting in line, the cashier scans and bags them and places them in your cart, you pay, and you get out of the way. Most self checkouts have no conveyor belt leading up to the scanner, so you have to remove each item from your cart as you?re checking out. Then you must either bag each item individually or place them on a conveyor belt to be bagged later (almost always by you). And I can almost guarantee that you do not bag as well or as quickly as an experienced cashier. And heaven forbid you have coupons or are paying with cash because it often takes a self checkout newbie ten minutes to find the slot for those. And while you?re designing the world?s worst computer system, you might as well make sure that?
# Things break way too easily. There?s usually a ?call a staff member? button on the computer screen in case you need assistance during your self checkout transaction. I?m pretty sure this button gets pushed every other transaction at my local supermarket. Whether it?s an incorrect price, accidentally double-scanned item, or some other abnormality in the checkout process, you?ll have to wait anywhere from 10 seconds to many minutes for help to arrive. On a couple of occasions, I?ve accepted an incorrectly scanned price and forfeited 10-50 cents because I knew it would take 5 minutes for someone to come and fix the price. I?m sure I?m not the only one, and I bet stores know it and love it.
I hope these thing go away...end of rant :'(
I dont mind them, like what was said about only a few items i can walk in and walk out pretty quick..... But if u have 3 kids and a huge piled over shopping cart u prolly shouldnt be using the self check out...
wow! less american jobs i will not use them. i support jobs not machines that cut them. you will see me in line. if you want to b-itch about that PM me we can f-ing talk....

I like them. Had I had some extra money when they first came out, I told my mom I wanted to invest in the original company making the self scan machines. Optimal Robotics (OPMR). Did great on the stock market for years. Coulda made a fortune. I don't know where you guys are using yours at, but I can sail through the checkout 10x faster at a U-scan than at a "manned" cashier. I don't buy that it costs jobs. All the stores I've been in took out 2 standard lanes to put in their self-checkouts and moved those cashiers to other lanes. No jobs lost.
i like keepin someone in a job, these things suck ass... rather deal with a human, not a machine...
i dont get a discount or a paycheck for ringin up & baggin my goods, they only have a few of them now. wait a few years & thats all they will have... IMO like kevin & ryan says, id like to see these gone...
can u say job elimination ==idunno

I like that idea, but sometimes I'd rather not wait for a bajillion hours when I only came to get cookies and milk lol. And, I personally think that most cashiers are somehow mentally handicapped. Maybe it's just near me, but the cashiers take waaaaay longer than I ever take in a self-checkout lane. And they are going to keep putting the self-checkout lanes in, it's just plain good for business. Look at the drive-through, I'm sure that cut out a few jobs. Automatic car washes. I don't see how you're mad for companies to finally be catching up on technology. I mean, you can buy groceries online now. just my .02 cents.

Totally agree with you 100%
i don't like them at all, if i have to do the job then cut the prices. i'd rather wait in line to talk to a human then use them dang thing's. and with 2 kids in tow those self checker thing are a bigger pain in the A$$ then what their worth, but that's just my 2cents
I actually like them sometimes... Its nice when I dont have a lot of things and there arent many people out. I can get in and out. BUT I hate them the way they talk to you...lol "please insert cash or press payment type" then it keeps saying that after every dollar you put in. That makes me mad. If I wanted to pay in a different way I can easily push the damn button without you telling me too like 20 times. Makes me wanna take a hammer to it. oh.....and also when it keeps telling you to bag the item and if it doesnt sense the weight change it keeps telling you. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i wont use the self check out lines. i would rather deal with a person. sure, the self checkout saves the store money but not us.. keep someone employed
