Title: Dodge Ram Wont Start!?!? NEW PROBLEM DETAILS on page 3
Post by: A.J. Hall on March 10, 2009, 06:30:15 PM
Ok, its a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 ext. cab. short bed 4x4 w/ the 318 5.2

The truck was acting funyn like when you get to 3000 rpms it would sputter or wanna stall. The check engine light came on and when ever you would jump on it it the check engie light would blink. I didnt make it to autozone in time to test it with a scanner. But I started it late that night and the truck was running fine and no check engine lights were comeing up. But this is gonna sound stupid. I was moving out of my house all night. And at like four in the morning I jumped in the truck to warm up(no heat in old house) and fell asleep. I cant remember if I started the truck or not. But the next morning I woke up in the house and went out to the truck to find the igntion on and the parking lights. So I must of started the truck and it stalled or something. So I jump started the truck and it started but as soon as I would let off the gas it would stall right out. After about 15 minutes of restarting it it finnally would idle. This was yesterday morning. Then it ran fall almost all day. The truck was really muddy from my backyard and I parked next to this big puddle in a parking lot and had my buddy drive past me through the puddle to wash my truck off. And he did, then went I went to move my truck forward it was running like crap and the check engine light came on and and would hardly move. So I took the air cleaner off. It was dry. The truck would idle decent but wouldnt rev up it would just bogg down and stall when you gave it gas. So I figured the cap and rotor got wet. I changed them and the put a ne coil on it and it still runs like crap. Not it wont even start, idle, nothing. It will just crank and if you hold the throttle allt he way open the truck will try to start and will start for a like 1 second and then shut down. I have no check engine lights or anything else. And all my accessories work. Any one got any ideas??

pretty sure you have to pull the sensor off to have it tested
Title: Re: Dodge Ram Wont Start!?!?
Post by: A.J. Hall on March 10, 2009, 08:19:41 PM
How do you test it once it is off? I was wondering about this.
Title: Re: Dodge Ram Wont Start!?!?
Post by: ride n dirty on March 10, 2009, 08:22:59 PM
when i had mine tested they used a little scanner and ran a thing trough the sensor and tell if it cut out or not

I put the scanner on and it said nothing was wrong. no codes, and such. But Sooo, these truck deffinitly SUCK to work on. I came to the idea that the coil started going bad and it fouled out the plugs and thats why when I put the new one on it didnt help so I am now in the process of changing the plugs and coil. But wow is Dodge dumb. They put these metal things around the plugs. Not sure why?? But it makes it near impossible to get the spark plugs out because the socket wont fit down there. Anyone have a tip they can give me to help out with this poor design? lol not to metion its ten times harder doing out in the road in the ran with no street lights and no lights but the cell phone light.lol. And limited tools

u need a data screen to see crank sensor working not a code puller like autozone has

your best bet is go to a local repair shop pay them 50-60$ to diagnos it properly  then fix it your self i have a lot people do that at my shop  it dont take long to throw that much in wrong parts at it . my  snap on modis scanner was $10,000

Ford or chevy lolz.
So I have replaced the Crank sensor, cap, rotor, plugs, and coil and nothing helped. I am going to try the Idle/Air Control valve and see if that helps.

Post by: Norm Henderson on March 13, 2009, 12:21:28 AM
have you checked your fuel pressure?
Title: Re: Dodge Ram Wont Start!?!?
Post by: A.J. Hall on March 13, 2009, 01:34:09 AM
I just replaced the IAC Valve and no change. :(
I did not check the fuel pressure. But I did pour gas in the throttle body and I can smell gas after crankng. Its getting plenty of gas and spark.

There is a very easy way to check codes, if I remember right. You turn key to ignition and turn off like 5 or 6 times, and then it will blink.

check this,  more in depth

http://www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html

That led me to find a TPS sensor was fxxxed and so was the o2 sensor and some other shiat.

Ummmm tps sensor made it so my truck wouldn't run, did not throw codes either. Do you have an alarm? Buddy had same exact truck as you, and his alarm malfunctioned and wouldn't let his truck start. So does it start at all now, or just no idle? I'm not a genius, but I am very good at searching the net for info.

Well it will start  for about one second if you hold your foot to the floor(leaving th ethrottle body open without flooding it) and then just bog down and stall.

Post by: Flat_Black on March 15, 2009, 01:05:30 AM
try the asd relay (auto shut down relay) there like 50 bucks from auto zone, its the asd and fuel pump relay together. or crank sensor, or the last thing it could be is the hall effect sensor under the dist. cap under the rotor.
Title: Re: Dodge Ram Wont Start!?!?
Post by: A.J. Hall on March 15, 2009, 03:02:52 AM
Thanks but if that relay was bad the fuel pump wouldnt kick on right?? Well I can hear the fuel pump kick on and then shut off after the three seconds or whatever. Already replaced the crank sensor. Not sure ont hat hall effect sensor. Lol. Never heard of it.

Throttle Positioning Sensor is worth a try.  ==idk Best thing to do is to start a list and start replacing things. ==idk It really sounds like the coil pack, or something along those lines cuz it bogs and stalls, but I'm no mechanic. U said u replaced the IAC right?

try the pick up coil, under the rotor in the distibutor. also try http://www.allpar.com/fix/stall.html read that. there talkin about cars there but its the same sense....... if not no hurt feelings here just tryin to help

Been talking on other forums and here is suggested answer, "I'd check the sensor circuits on the cam and crank sensor both, they share ref voltage and ground. Check the asd relay circuits. Primary voltage for the coil--injectors, among other, gets voltage from the asd relay. "

Ok new problem now!! I cut the cat off and the truck will now run and rev up fine but as soon as I let off the throttle the truck will stall. but if I dont hit the gas it will idle fine.  Also at start up I have no oil pressure and then it jumps right up to 40 pounds. Then during Idle it will drop to 0 pounds. But then I give it gas and it jumps back up to 40 pounds na dthen drops to zero again at like 10 seconds later.
