Title: engine block fix???? and got a question about the head?
Post by: rebelryder on March 26, 2009, 12:54:17 PM
so i have a 4.0 that the rod busted a hole in the block. was wondering if that is repairable or not. i doubt it but i figured i would ask

i can just get the tip of my pinky in it its really not that big of a hole.

also i got my old head dirty when i was tearing it out. i need to put it on the new engine now since it has a burnt valve and a bad bad tick. can i just use a garden hose or should i use mineral spirits

personally i'd get a new block. if your short on cash you can JB weld that hole shut using some window screening as a backing to stiffen it up. not alot of heat in that area and jb weld is pretty oil resistant if done right. the block must be perfectly clean though so a good hot tank session would do.

OK, you were on the right track with the new block part.... then it all went down hill with the JB weld part.  That is just a ridiculous thing to recommend.

i would not recommend jb weld but have seen many blocks jb welded and most of them held up well

x2. i have a block thats in my S-10 JB welded in the valley due to a crack that coolant was leaking internally. and thats in a hot area with 15 PSI of coolant pressure against it. no problems with over 5000 miles on it since build.

I guess I am just not one to take short cuts on things like this.

If I am going to do a fix that concerns the block... I am going to fix it right the first time.  Everything else bolts to the block.  The quick fix doesnt hold... off everything comes.

Now, maybe an intake I would consider.

depends what kind of dirt? dirt from the ground or engine grease and grit? soap and water will take care of the regular dirt mineral spirits will take care of grease and grit. might have to do alittle scrubbing with a wire brush.

just dirt from the ground and from the engine bay and what not. i think i may just take some mineral spirits and dunk it in a bucket.
