Title: Edelbrock carb questions
Post by: play time on April 10, 2009, 02:29:16 PM
Well, as many of you might know by now if you were watching the up north trail ride threads, I have some issues with my Edelbrock carb.

First issue is that it always wants to flood over and on some hills it wants to stall.  I could actually see fuel draining down the secondaries while running.  I got a dvd from a friend of mine yesterday about Edelbrock troubleshooting, so I removed the carb and took the top of it off to check the floats.  The seemed a little off to me from what the video showed, so I adjusted them a bit so they should close earlier.  I am hoping that solves this problem, but I won't know until I drive it for a bit.

Second issue I have is lack of power.  I know when I push the pedal to the floor, the secondaries do open up, that is one of the first things I checked.  I can hear a difference in sound when the secondaries open up, but there is no difference at all in power.   I am thinking that what is going on is the jets are to small for the secondaries, and when they open up there is just enough fuel to keep it from falling on it's face, but not enough to give any more power.  I was able to remove one of the jets to try and see some numbers on it, but they were unreadable.  The other one was stuck in there so bad I couldn't get it out and now it is stripped  ==pissed ==doh

I made sure all of the passages were clean and free of any dirt, put it back together and still not much of a difference.  It just seems to me like there should be a huge difference in power when the secondaries open up.

OH, it is an Edelbrock 1405, 650 CFM, manual choke.

get a Holley or a demon carb you will be happy....I had a edelbrock 650 cfm Manuel choke on my last truck and I hated it you had to pump the piss out of it to get enough fuel in the carb to start then it would fall on it's face and want to stall when you play with the throttle....never had good luck with edelbrock carbs....get a holley or a demon

I have thought about getting a truck avenger or even going TBI, but it just isn't in the budget right now, so I have to try and make this POS work for now.

Huh.. I've used Edlebrocks for years with good results..
sounds as though someone has been in there messin with it.. and not knowin what they're doin.. (ie.. float adj.)

are you sure that the lack of power is due to fuel delivery and not mechanical (worn motor)
vacume leak, in need of a tuneup, choke adj.,   needle and seat, mixture ratio correct

if you've been dumping fuel into the motor your plugs may very well be fouled.. valves carboned up     yada  yada yada..

It runs smooth when the carb isn't messing up and fires right up after two pumps every time.  There is no missing at all.  It just lacks that extra oomph when the secondaries open up.
