I don't run one, several people in our club do however..

the theory is that:
1. it cuts down on splash into the engine compartment
2. it acts as a ski or deflector,  it prevents (to a certain extent) the pig (diff)  from "diggin in"
also may help in preventing tie rod/cross over bend which is common on stock Chevy tie rods.

i run one, looks kinda goofy but my truck can be completely covered in mud and
the motor will be almost spotless, but i also did a good job on wheel well guards as well.

I run one, it does look kinda goofy and only helps to a point.
I have the engine compartment sealed off pretty good , Rad is in the bed only problem is the valve covers on the motor are the same hieght as the tires, so if the tires are under water so is the motor.

44's 5" body lift-lots of fender triming.

          just dont see how

i use rubber roofing   for all       both wheel wells   and the bottem off rad  to oil filter    block the motor not the steering   stuff       i dont care for the look of the rug drapped down from the front  plus by blocking all air you force the rad to kool more   you should always use a fan shoud  to direct it

just think of it as your truck licking mother earth and yes the tongue works if it is long and wide enough should be from frame to frame and no more the eight inch's from the ground
