Title: Hard drive ?
Post by: Hammerlane on September 23, 2009, 05:09:36 PM
Scenario:
My club has a web site that needs to be maintained (Moonlight Stompers . com), I am going to do this on my home puter'
I will have to download the site (and related maint. software) from some other site, get the current pass word and I should be up and running.

Question:
I want to do this as said on my home computer, can I/should I install another hard drive and utilize it solely for the web site?  therefore seperating the web site (and all the space needed) from my home info, and in turn allow the removal/transfer of control of the site to another computer by simply removing the hard drive and reinstalling it into another computer?
I'm sure it is possible, but is it a good idea?

you would be better off getting a external hdd. and using that for your website so if you want to move it to another computer just unplug the usb and wall plug and go. i would get a 1tb hdd.

ok, cool, but forgive me for I am amoung the computer illiterate..
this external hard drive I assume they are easily purchased, and would be about the size of say.. um a pack of hamburger buns??
and would simply plug into the back (or front) of my computer tower by way of usb and then be accessible thru the "My Computer" button on my desktop?? (or something to that effect)..

My 1TB USB external is actually smaller then that, its about the size of 2 DVD cases put together.  Just plugs into any open USB port, and it showes up under my computer.....   Hope it helps

Thank you for the offer, the guy that set the site up is going to get it together for us.. I just wanted to make sure (second opinion) and kind of know a little bit about it before we jumped.. the club will pick up the tab for the hdd..

I'm sure I'll have some more ?'s once we get it hooked up..
Thanks again.

if you had the spare cash I'd run the website off of a different computer, any time you or your family members uses the computer you are going to cause lagging, and any spy-ware and or viruses you pick up are going to spread to the users...

you can get decent used computers cheap online, I'd go with a Dell Optiplex and max the RAM out in it and use it as a dedicated server for the site...

a site I get parts through has them for between $90 and $179, if you are interested...

You mean that any viruses etc.. will spread from one hard drive to the other??
I thought it (another hard drive) would be like having another computer inside my computer and I could keep them completely seperate..

some viruses can, my old computer had 3 hard drives, 2 Windows and one Linux, both Windows drives got infected...

while you are using one drive for your self and someone is on the other one your computer is going to be accessing both drives

would never be more than one person using the puter at a time, would anyone on the website while on a different computer affect my hard drive?

the usb hard drive would be much slower than a hard drive inside of the computer. Also the smaller the usb drive the slower it spins, we will see when they start to catch up.

would not effect the performance of your main drive, you would however effect the websites performance, the website takes up RAM and CPU time as well, thats what I ment by lag...

that all depends on the hard drive its self, if you want fast you need a fast drive, my usb drive is 7200 RPM and its still faster than the 5400 RPM in my computer, last time I looked you can get them as high as 15000 RPM, its been a few years so there might be faster ones on the market...

again I'm illiterate about this stuff so bear with me please..

RAM and CPU are what? and how are they provided (main hard drive, something inside my current computer?)
and from what you stated above.. an internal HD would be a better solution over an external?
and still be capable to be transferred to another computer?

Best solution would be a complete stand alone/dedicated computer?

site will be full of pix and vids mostly.. along with written stuff (ie.. meeting dates, member profiles, upcoming events etc...)

if he is computer illiterate than Linux might not work well for him...

CPU is what runs the computer, but it can only do so many things, the more it has to work the slower it will be, especially if you are going to be doing videos...

RAM is like a highway for your computer, the smaller the size (i.e 512mb) smaller the road, think of it like this, 512mb = 2 lane contry road, 1 gig = 2 lane highway with passing lane, 1.5 gig = 4 lane highway...

so the more RAM you have the less congestion you eill have, everything has to pass through the RAM, higher clock speed RAM will help as well, think of the RAMs clock speed like the speed limit for roads and highways, 400mHz = 40mph, 800mHz = 75mph, most motherboards can only handle one or two different clock speeds for RAM though...
