Title: Netgear wired router question
Post by: Bowtie972 on October 05, 2009, 01:30:22 AM
I have my all my rooms wired for internet, cat5 cable, Ive only had one computer hooked up til now,   saturday I installed netgear splitter in basement and added second computer in another room,    but it wouldnt connect.  So I powered everything down, computers and modem. netgear etc.. What I found is whatever  computer gets turned on first gets the signal and the other cannot bring net up.  charter told me I need a booster...         Im not that up on this kind of stuff so does anyone have any suggestions on what to buy or do to fix this??  thanx

Id go pick up a router(50$ at walmart) that will allow all the computers to connect to the net at the same time.

easiest thing is to just get a wireless router, that what I use, less clutter from all the wires...

YOU CAN SET UP A SWITCH TO WORK BUT YOU HAVE TO MANUALLY SET THE IP ADDRESS. BUT IF THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPUTERS BEING USED AT THE SAME TIME YOU WILL HAVE WHATS CALLED COLLISIONS.  IN YOUR CASE BEFORE YOU RAN THE WIRE AND SPLICED ALL IF THOSE RJ 45 CONNECTORS.....OH THAT BRINGS UP ANOTHER POINT WHEN YOU SPLICE THEM THERE IS A DIFFERENT WIRE CONFIGURATION WHEN GOING TO DIFFERENT EQUIPMENT LIKE SAY COMPUTER TO ANOTHER COMPUTER OR A ROUTER OR SWITCH. THE BEST BET IS A WIRELESS ROUTER WITH ONE CONNECTED HARDWIRE SO YOU CAN LOG INTO THE ROUTER TO CONFIGURE IT AND THE REST WITH WIRELESS CARDS INSTALLED.

if you go wireless don't forget to enable security, you don't want neighbors downloading crap and getting you in trouble...
