This Project starts with an old rusty 40 GM Military truck ( ton and a half ) that belongs to a friend of mine. He paid $200 for it..

Thats what we have started with, after a little rust removal it was able to fit inside!
then to the installation of a SB chevy 350 with a TH400 bolted to it.. goin to use the original 2 speed t case.. ( hope it lasts lol )
oh yea had to build a custum trans cross member..
We also shortened the wheel base a little bit to help improve trailablity, did away with the old broken spring and gathered up some GM spings and hangers
(http://i564.photobucket.com/albums/ss87/4x4mutt/Rat%20Phucker/DSCF0315.jpg)
thats pretty much where she sets atm, need to gather up more materials for the from hangings in the front.
we have a line on a cleaner cab and will prolly do some custum bed work for the back, its been a fun build so far and there will be more update as get get closer to completion.

frustrated left my sheet metal for fust repair in my truck at the office so f%#@g hot dont wanna work on anything not much time left in the day after work ==kp
corect me if im wrong but you took the stock leaves out and put chevy leafs under it? wouldnt that ruin the purpose of haveing the 1.5 ton? unless you just wanted the axles and body? but then wouldnt it have been easier to set the axles under a suburban or longbox frame with fully working drivetrain and put the body on that, either way cool project and good work, im just wondering where your comeing from b/c i might be able to get my hands a 2.5ton and trying to get ideas of wich way to takle it
i changed the leafs beacuse they were 2 inch wide xabout 8inch tall spring packs that were intended to haul weight just like a 6x6 or other 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 ton truck i used chevy truck springs and mounts beacuse thats what i had and my bro gave me the springs as far as putting the axels under a chevy truck or watever else i wanted to build somethin different and this truck that i started with was used and lived just up the road from the farm where i grew up i looked at it every time i drove buy my entire life and thought it was tuff looking way before i was ever intersted in boggin besides how many other 1940 chevy military trucks have you ever seen at a bog or mounds or anywere else? its my version of a rat rod ill break parts when its done but that will give me a reason to upgrade parts like the axels and it only cost 200 bucks after rust removal and a trip to the scrap yard i had 180 in my pocket if your gonna build somethin make it what you want it dosent have to be high dollar ya see people havin just as much fun in a stock beat up geo tracker as the guys with tractor tires and big blocks ==thumbsup

got one side of the cab fixed up pretty good enough for me going to be getting sat and sundays off for a couple weeks have some time to do some work on it i hope to have it going by turkey day but who knows only time will tell
picked up a stainless fuel tank at the scrap yard yesterday i think about 20 gallons couldnt pass it up for 22 bucks also half of a 1000 GALLON Propane tank to build a outdoor wood stove out of getting closer to being done maybe by turkey day without hydro steering have to try the farm strong method firstand see what happens
tank is 15 gallons found the tag on it what was left anyway got it mounted up yesterday said f#$% it and cut the frame of 6 inches behind rear spring hanger about 20 inch off should increase departure angle
i had a heck of a time getting 9/16 bolts for my springs finnally found them at tri county equipment and got all my spring bushings in and bolted together been consentrating on the hydro steering and have to make a bracket to bolt to the pumpkin and weld one onto steering linkage im probally over thinking it but i dont want to have any isues down the road
gonna roll out of the barn today and clean the shop eventually all the rust will be gone ==beavis

Yup, Id say 4x4fun is right. I think you can do it that way, use the 350 stuff on the 400 crank and balance the whole rotating assembly - the holes drilled halfway through would be where they balanced it. Instead of addin weights they took some weight off.. Im pretty sure unless you buy some fancy rods, ya gotta grind part of them off or they hit the block or the cam right there in the top inside the motor. Makes for a low-end rumble that turns into a clanking sound and then the whole thing gets pretty quiet after that ==roll - I read some on it just now and I guess theyre sellin kits ready to go, we used to just make them in the machine shop.. Cool beans, oughtta rip!
got the engine trans bolted together ready to go in today havent had much time to work on it since my wife has been on my but to get HER house done but got the OK to put the engine in woohoo oh ya got my hood back from my neighbor looks great just like new if i can make the rest of the truck look as good itll bee to nice to get muddy ya right hahahahahahaha ==wgm
I work in a factory making crankshaft pulleys for gm. The holes are "balance holes" without them it would shake your rig to pieces. Some of the more high performance gm pulleys are hot balanced all the way around the pulley then ballanced on just one side. The LSA's for super charged caddys weight about 18 lbs and theyre blanced under .25 oz.
engine and trans is in most everything bolted to the front including a new water pump gotta build a new trans crossmember so sam wont worry about it lol ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Lmfao
well sam and i got the engine runnin fired up nice seems to run real good should make more power than the tired old one lol transmission worked long enough to back it out the barn then wouldnt move checked the oil and pepto bismo colored ==pissed ==pissed ==pissed ==pissed ==pissed ==pissed ==pissed ==pissed time to get one rebuit up and put that in thinkin about TG W in romeo this spring should have enuff time to nget all together again and hopoefully some paint work also
I know a good trans guy loll
Very Cool Project!

(http://i564.photobucket.com/albums/ss87/4x4mutt/Rat%20Phucker/DSCF0315.jpg)
thats pretty much where she sets atm, need to gather up more materials for the from hangings in the front.
we have a line on a cleaner cab and will prolly do some custum bed work for the back, its been a fun build so far and there will be more update as get get closer to completion.

i shure screwed up when i tore this apart the spare tire bracket between the cab and rear wheel is worth about 500 $$ and not to mention the other stuff like gas tank brackets and the winch on it all went for scrap what a dumby i am
The 2 next door wouldve been interested in that stuff most likely, anything like that when its original even if very rusty is big $$ - Youre no dummy, you built a gnarly truck outta that thing applaudd Dont worry bout it ;D
i do the same stuff, it happens. thrown away nicer interiors than most people have ever owned, and smashed hundreds of rust free body panels on my old chevelle and cutlass figure 8'ers. oh well...
yup when i got this thing home i got a little excited with the torch and wasent thinkin about anything but loosing weight on the truck and making it in the trailer lol oh well live and learn on another note i got a transmission all tore down and ready for some upgraded parts i found some circle track parts to make it only 1st gear but i dont need that so just some hd clutches and new drum and low gear band should be stronger than a stocker anyway ==wgm
gettinalot of little things donemade some bed rails for sides got that put together and painted workin on transmission havent had time to drive to flint and get the parts gunna try tommorow got the front tires all grooved /cut up thinkin about taking the cab back of from the frame and take it to someone who has the equipment to build a roll cage after that id say it will be done to a point i guess but will it ever be completely done ???????? ==wgm

yeah resurrect that old Iron
so i finnally got all my transmission parts and a hp book that shows ya how to make all the small mods to improve pressure and lubrication to different areas gotta drill out a few holes and block off a couple different ones should be pretty strong and i cant wait to see what it does in a pit
picked up a used Jand W bellhousing that has the gm and p o b bolt patterns to it also a drive shaft loop for the one between trans and t case im excited about that bell housing i can bolt any gm auto trans to it or any motor like the caddy sittin in the barn

front pump bushing had a burr on it not letting the convertor go into the gear all the way put back together and moves back and forth gotta get a shifter
chompin at the bit waiting for my new shifter should be here today via ups did however get a d shaft loop put in between trans and t case its real close to the shifting rods for t case and didnt want em to get tore up if a u joint fails

Yup, x2 Dang! I hate it when that happens. ==censor
weird thing is the trans works in low and reverse anyway im gunna take it back out take out the pump check it over iguess this was to be expected as this is the first one ive tried to overhaul ill give it one more try then if that fails ill go pay someone 6 or 7 hundred to tell me what i did wrong i guess
Hope it works for u man!
hahaha it works changed the pump out and no leaks ??? ???did the same things to the first one ??? ??? got it down to 18 minutes to take it out and about 25 to put back in lol
So she moves???
yup moves and no leaking lol have to get a alternator now turned on the fans and it smokes the belt and isnt charging also going to go back to a mechanical fuel pump i dont think my regulator is working properly shifter is all mounted and works smoothly ==wgm and the frustration level is way down also ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

500 caddilac
Automatic Transmission Gear Ratios
1st 2nd 3rd 4th Reverse
GM
Powerglide 1.76 1.00 1.76
TH350 2.52 1.52 1.00 1.93
TH400 2.48 1.48 1.00 2.00
200r4 2.74 1.57 1.00 0.67 2.07
700r4 3.06 1.62 1.00 0.70 2.29
4L60E 3.06 1.62 1.00 0.70 2.29
4L80E 2.48 1.48 1.00 0.75 2.08
It takes 18 hp to turn a th350, and 36 hp to turn a th400. 700R4 has the lowest 1st gerar ratio, but it has to have a better sprag or some p00 installed to be durable. The powerglide is killin the truck. If youll notice the 1st gear ratios of all the other transmissions are lower than your 1st gear, and your 1st gear is close to their 2nd gear. I would go with a th350 that has the bb left out and governor spring replaced with a piston pin deal or a beefed up 700R4. TH400 robs horsepower, Id only use it with a high HP small block or a big block. Theres not much wrong with your motor that a screwdriver, plug socket, and a 9/16" wrench would fix ;D
cool info thanks marty i can make the first gear in this trans lower also cheaper than building another trans just a matter of pulling it and taking the pump off and change the planetary gear im also looking into getting a auxillary trans to put in there before the t case
I sunk a lot of money into my 700r4 to make it durable......I have about 800 to 1000bux just in parts in mine.....
big block time. your running 54's!

Mite need a valve adjustment or heavier valve springs, mite need to play with the vacuum advance some, Idk just gotta experiment since the specifics of the internals of the motor are unknown - pretty sure we can get more outta that and need to get rid of that sound whatever it is ;D
ill have too mess with it at ellis rd i dont have any place to really run it here in the yard and the wife gets pissed when i tear up the grasss i did have some time too make some spring shackles to stop the helper springs from twisting and i also need to reinforce the rear hangers got a couple peices of tube on order from the free store just gotta get some rod ends and weld on the mounts for traction/wrap bars

no reason, I just like to if its possible to make sure things are lined up
i see hope it all lines up it should the gears fit tight into the two halfs i put all the parts in the oven for a couple hours on broil before weldin then back in there when i was done then kept lowering the temp i dont know if it made a difference but the bead didnt crack like cast usually does

nope took the plugs out #2 has chunks of metal in there and #8was full of oil and coolant mixture
Not good that sucks
small update got a 454 from a motorhome took that all down for inspection along with all new gaskets tore the heads down and spent probably 5 hours per head smoothing the ruff castings up sam was up here and helped me put it in there got everytrhing all hooked up and filled with coolant went too put the t-convertor bolts in and realized the holes weren't there ==doh soo pulled the 2 back apart and drilled flywheel out all back together now just gotta bolt the hood and side panels on engine runs excellent should be reliable I hope ;D ;D ;D
roll cage is almost done pretty tricky too get it all in there considering theres less room than a s 10 cab came together pretty nice tho just a couple more pieces too weld in ;D

thanks jimmy has the 3/1 case in it just a little different from what you have basically a stock 454 for engine and 2 speed powerglide trans
