Title: Project Assassin
Post by: Hitman89x on July 16, 2010, 10:37:14 PM
OK so im finally getting around to putting this on here....  bought a 1989 ranger 5spd 2.9l 4x4 needs a lot of work will be my DD as well as my off road play toy.. haha

so far...

got the truck first day had awful ticking from motor tore into to find about half an inch of sludge... WOOHOO  ==censor so tore the motor out tore it down sent block and head to machine shop one head was cracked the other was warped... so new heads are needed...

( if anyone knows where i can find some WP heads that would be excellent.. )

anyway... found out block is still good going to have it bored .030 over and ill rebuild it...  this time with proper cooling  applaudd going to get the 4.0l radiator and 180 degree thermostat with electric fans?

also will port/ polish the heads a little when i get them and get some nice headers and bigger injectors also try to find the bigger throttle body for it.. and lastly i mihgt get a chip for it.. but they cost way to much.. this is going to be a little beast when done..

very  nice  good  start.  now  as  for  the  2.9  i  would  not  waist  my  time  or  money  on  it  i  have  alwas  found  them  to  be  underpowered  and  easy  to  blowup  in  high  rpms.  ditch  it  for  a  4.0  or  a  302.  me  my  self  i  would  hunt  the  junk  yards  for  a  newer  ranger  and  buy  the 4.0  motor  trans  a  shift  on  the  floor  transfer  case an  wireing  harness  and  install  that.

I had an 88 2.9 5 speed....I had it for 5 years, and wrenched on it constantly.  Eventually i rebuilt the top end, (heads valves lifters etc.) then blew out the bottom end, put in an ACdelco remanned motor (yeah they do ford motors too, go figure) and sold the truck less than a year later...its been through 3 motors since....the ticking is the lifters, the engine design is very inefficient and has no power, and I dont think the bottom end will handle upgrades to the top end.  When I pulled my heads the machine shop told me 80-90% of the heads that come off, come off cracked, both of mine did.  I would seriously consider an engine swap. I put so much into my motor when I had mine, and that is the biggest regret I had.  JMO though, this is your truck not mine.  Otherwise at some point I will try and dig up pictures of the transformation of my truck, so far looking at your pictures is like deja vu.

that thing would be wicked with a 302...
Title: Re: Project Assassin
Post by: Hitman89x on July 17, 2010, 10:49:21 PM
would be nice to put the 302 in it but that means alot of custom stuff that i dont want to get into now... and like i said its kinda more a weekend warrior truck trail ride and light mud.. as for the motor im going to get the newer thicker designed heads and like i said better cooling also doing some tricks i found on the ranger station to up the power  with bigger injectors and what not.. plus it will be all new bottom end .020 main bearing and .010 rod bearins reground crank (balanced)  as for the noise on the top end the ranger has a thread for free floating rocker arms that improve oil flow ALOT  with the proper cooling and proper oil flow it should be a killer motor  i would be more worried about the dinky little Mitsubishi POS tranny i got behind it..

just did some math for the motor and if i had the motor bored .040 over it would be a 3.0l engine then  probably going to stick with the .030 over bore... just thought it was good info!

It should be a mazda not a mitsubishi. (asian is asian though right?)  I had 200k on the mazda 5 speed, and since i've sold it, its gotten another 130k+.  I dont think you will have a problem with the tranny, just put a good clutch in it, I had a centerforce in mine.

nothing was clean. there was over an inch of build up oil/carbon it looked like. just proves the sbc 350 even more so!

Update  ==np

Went to parts galore got my 19# injectors (free) shhhh  ;) also got a 5.0l HO throttle body  and had my dad make a throttle body adapter/ TB spacer (he even put the spiral in the center like the big brand ones and it only cots me 10$ for the aluminum instead of 150$ for  a stupid spacer! and lastly i made my free floating rocker arms! props to my dad with all his machines in his shop!  ++peace
++cant see the spiral in the center of spacer because my camera phone is crap..++

2.9l runs incredible i spin my tires (accidentally) around every corner ROFL it feels like its a real torque monster, and with the 4.0l radiator electric fan combo +160 degree thermostat it doesnt get hot at just warm enough to run correctly +++ i havent done my third oil change yet but everything still seems to be good im actually surprised how much this motor has woken up with all the modification..  i would love to get it dyno'd  but i aint payin for that...

oh and its even cooler that i moded it and its speed density and runs correctly lol  i guess i did it right? ported intake from tb to heads and bigger injects + bigger bore  so its almost like the computer presets are still a good configuration for it =) just wish i could throw a choppy cam  in it =(

ok so i found out one side of my truck  has bad ball joints and the other side some how one of the locking nuts on the spindle that holds the wheel bearing moved forward because the other locking nut got sheered away some what so i need to hunt down these parts ASAP i need all the wheel bearing crap... also the etire back brake pad was missing except for a chunk of metal stuck in the rotor....  ==censor  ==censor  ==censor  ==censor  ==censor  ==censor  ==censor ==pissed hopefully parts store has my p00..

upgrade to some stage 8 locking nuts. ive heard those spindles are notorious for backing themselves off when rapidly going from foreward to reverse a bunch of times... poor setup if u ask me... and ive known a guy to lose a WHOLE inner pad(metal plate n all) on his full size ttb axle...  ==goodluck

down the road i would almost look into gettina solid front axle for it, possibly one from a jeep. lot stronger and less complicated than the ttb axle stuff... just requires some fabwork to get it under there...

UPDATE TIME!...

ok so i was having electrical issues in my ranger for a while and one day my batt gauge read low.. and over night battery died.. so i charged up my batt. put it back in my truck and over night it died again! so i was pretty pissed  went through all my wiring looking for a short.. ripped apart the insde of my truck ( still in a thousand peices..)  and i could find no SHORT!!! so being all pissed off i tried roll starting my truck  and ended up breaking off the mirror on my mom new fusion.... got her a new one and put it on no biggie... so i did some research online and found out that the alternator can actuall take power from your battery if its messed up said that if it is the alt. will be warm so i went outside after letting my truck sit with the battery on for a couple hours and yet motor ice cold alt. hot  ??? so instead of ordering a crappy 60 amp stock model i decided to go with a new 100 amp model from tuff stuff, ill install it tomorrow and post how it works =) also since my gauges are all out im swapping in blue LEDS for the gauges will post pics as soon as i get them in the mail and install   ++peace

i will check it out the v8 swap is deff. in its future once i kill the beasty six i built =)  next summer im going to finnish the body work and do my 4 inch lift  so for winter all i have is interior mods im working on.  i have to figure out how to mount my new alt. i put it in but the adjusting bar doesnt reach so i  have to make something but i started up the truck ( held it back with bungee and ran like a champ =) ran at full voltage turned on my heat full my headlights and my off road lights and it droped down to the middle bar on the indicator.. think i need some more grounds on this thing.. there is only one ground to frame and block what you think?
Title: Re: Project Assassin
Post by: Kyle on December 03, 2010, 08:29:33 AM
def needs more. fords are weird with grounds too... the more ya have the better for them
Title: Re: Project Assassin
Post by: bud on December 03, 2010, 04:16:07 PM
i had like 4 on my ranger one on each side of the body under the doors to frame one from top of the block to the fire wall and one from the block to frame

anything more than stock is always better! especially when ur runnin all those lights! i have mine grounded directly to the bottom of the body, with more grounds to come

Post by: Hitman89x on December 09, 2010, 10:28:10 PM
I love my new alt. and i put for grounds from frame to  body and one from block to body and it sits nice an still with almost everything on.. I LOVE IT!@  only goes down a little bit when i crank the heat lol... but in other news i just bought two 12" 1000 watt RMS, 2000 watt  subs =) so getting a a powerful alt. was a good idea haha  now the other question is should i get another battery? and if you think it would be a good idea a little info on hooking up a second batt. would be great!
Title: Re: Project Assassin
Post by: Kyle on December 10, 2010, 08:11:46 AM
not hard. the hardest part is making sure the second battery is SECURE and dont bounce around! then all ya gotta do it hook + to + and - to - and it will be all good to go! ya might not need it tho. i got a 1k amp and a 200 amp along powering all speakers and sub with normal accessories, 4 150w offroad lights 4 100w offroad lights. its all on stock alt and a 930 cca diehard battery. but a second battery would not hurt ya at all to have just in case ya leave ur lights on!

if your runing stock 8.8 l/s you sould put new clutches in it if you rebuild it tight with a extra clutch on each side you will like it mine locks up like a spool when you get on it

i probably dont need the 205 strength wise but thats a great plus that there bullet proof... but i got it for the small size it is... fits between ranger frame rails only downside is that the little tcsae weighs about the same or More than the trans O.O

i looked up ur cam and i gotta say WOW HOLY CAM! that thing is even bigger than what im even running but it should fit your heads very nicely. itll be a good mid range-high rpm motor. but why didnt ya go full roller since you had all that money invested in the rest of the top end?
