Title: 00 jimmy help
Post by: Blazin40s on February 01, 2011, 04:15:29 PM
Have a 00 4 door jimmy with 4.3 vortec, and auto trac tcase.  I was driving it yesterday and I forgot it was in 4wheel drive for about 2 min after gettin off the snowy dirt road.  Anyways it started shaking and binding up in front end.  So I get out n look and see pinion at front diff was smoking.  So I figure pinion bearing.  I put it in 2wheel amd continue on my way.  Couple min later it starts acting sluggish and kinda sputtering, then I loose my speedo and 3rd and 4th gear.  Trans fluid is kinda burnt smelling.  But why would my speedo act up?  It jumps around and stops working and will start working again.  Maybe computer for trans????

Sounds like you smoked your fron diff and tranny at the same time. I drive my pickup around in auto a lot and its fine.

Because your VSS is located on your 4l60e that is toast.

Biggest issue you are probably having with frying your transmissions is torque management system in the PCM. They program it for smooth shifts and smooth shifts = Clutches slipping! Clutches slipping = Kentucky Fried 4L60E! If you install a new transmission have the torque management turned down to 20% and boost line pressure. You can do all this with EFI Live.

It seems like Jimmy's and Bravada's have more torque management than S10 trucks or Blazers? I am not sure about this but our Bravada shifts like butter and our friends Blazer has a much firmer shift...Bravada's and Jimmy's are more tailored for women and old people who like smooth shifts.

You want to have at least 20% TQ management left on though to take some of the harshness of the shifts out so you don't break hard parts like sunshell and planetary gears.

If you dont have access to EFI live a transmission shop might be able to program it for you. Also Vette servo's help a lot as far as firming up your shifts to reduce clutch slippage.

Last but most important if you replace transmission run a good transmission cooler and use Dexron VI it is a far superior fluid that can take more heat before breaking down...heat kills automatic transmissions!!!
