Title: 5.13 or 5.38?
Post by: Blazin40s on February 21, 2011, 10:02:24 PM
Runnin d60 and 14ff.  And 39.5 tires now.  Next set of tires will b 42 or 44s.  My rpm on freeway now at 70mph is 1700 or so.  What gears should I run?  Also in front should I go detroit or full spool or leave open?  Will it effect my turning on street with front locked with hubs unlocked?

44's deff 5.38's 5.13's are good to 40" looks like your powerband is right where it should be @ 70 Detroit all the way up front. Hubs unlock so no need to worry.

Where you need it is 3' in the peat. 5.38's are nice for 44's .

I could be mistaken...but i think they only make 5:13s for 14 bolt......atleast about a year or so ago they didnt have anything above that.

do not put spool in the front you will hate it. not detroit locker to.  buy a power lock, true track. use something with clutches. so you can turn.  i would go with 5.38 gears if thay make them for a 14 bolt now.

Broke one with my 44's and they were about slicks.  Run nothing but the 205 now.

To drive around just unlock them you will burn the clutches out of a L/S diff. on 44's

When in the deep stuff nice to have all 4 spinning.   5.38's all the way.

538 same $$         513s and 208 and 44s  all day long    had this in my 79 chevy      /   i order by 538s from randys ring and pinion should be here thursday       you need a new carrier for the 60   and thick gears for the 14bolt plus the install kits   .

Would I need carrier with 5.13s?
Title: Re: 5.13 or 5.38?

You could just weld up the front diff as far as that goes. It dont matter long as you got lock-in hubs and the t-case is in 2wd. A rod or 2 and some electric is way cheaper than all that gobbledy-gook high-price whatchamajiggers. Spend that money on somethin else you want for it. Turns just like a 2wd. Then you go to the local loblolly, lock in the front hubs, put it in 4wd, and punch it maybe youll make it maybe youll break it, right? Build it, bog it, break it, repeat like the one guy says on here - I think he has a Monte Carlo  ;D

On a slightly different note, I couldnt tell ya how many times Ive seen trucks with just 1 front and 1 rear wheel spinnin and them gettin stuck. Gotta have all 4 pullin. Before ya get in the pit, ==lmaoo

yes a 60 goes to a410 then a different carrier from there down   100$ or less   i got 700 shipped into mine
new 60 carrier open both r@ps front and rear 538s  for a  60 /14  rear was think gears and 2 master install kits      andyou shouldnt have  any trouble resaling the 410s if reasonable $$

if your running 411s now buy the thick 538s for the rear weld or spool it unless you run the road alot the front if you cant aford a locker run it open for now,, welded is great for straight runs and price but forget turning if your hubs are locked it dosnt want to turn ,,as far as the carrier in the dana 60 buy a ring gear spacer summit has them save for a locker ,,i didnt have much luck with posi fronts with 40" tires and up the work for awhile but let you down ,,so leave it open or a locker the best answer is a ox locker but ouch pricey
