this thing has me stumped. this is my moms van, seems like about every three to four months it cracks the coil and causes a crank no start. i looked around and cant seem to notice anything hitting it. it has a new distributer, cap, and roter.
anybody have or heard of this problem.. any ideas to keep the coil together?also usally happens when its damp out
Try to fab up a few rubber bushings to fit in between the coil and the motor, maybe use a few rubber washers or something. Then don't tighten so tight you squish the washers, use locktight to make sure the bolts don't back out, the idea is to isolate the coil from vibration, 4.3's are notorious for vibration even with the balance shaft. Also you might want to try another brand of coil, try an aftermarket, MSD or something.
Have you replaced the coil wire as well? Might have a pin hole in it and be arcin out.. Also the plug wires.. If you have wires arcin, it can cause trouble throughout the ignition system. Cracked spark plug arcin same deal..Idk exactly how many volts that particular one runs on, but some run on something less than 12 volts. If its been tampered with to the point where the power supplied to it is greater than what its supposed to be, that will cause problems up to and including it exploding. Might want to check the wires going to it to see if one is shorted to a 12 volt source if it ends up that it actually does require less than 12 volts. Just a thought. The vibration thing is probably what it is... ;D
thanks guys ima pull the dog house back off in the morning and try and fabricate something up, but u did a full tune up roughly a year ago when my mom ran the van down south, so im thinking all the wires and plugs are good. thanks again for the tips.
thanks guys it ended up being a cracked coil and a corroded cap..

Did you get to the bottom of why the coil keeps cracking? What kind of coil are you using? I would stay away from parts store coils and just get an OEM from the dealer!
Our 98 Safari had the same DANG thing. New coil (old one had crack in the post) bolted into stock bracket has been good since. ==censor now I jinxed myself.
i put a orielly special back on i noticed a ground strap off so maybe that could of been the cause with a voltage spike??? idk. it was a warrenty swap on the part, if it goes again its getting a new chevy coil.
