Title: 2001 Grand Cherokee 4x4, blown 4.0 help?
Post by: MrCompton734 on March 11, 2011, 04:57:31 PM
Well my g/f had her 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee(4x4 4.0) before I met her and basically the motor is blown up in some form. She said it still would run but made a REALLY bad and loud noise. It had to be towed. Anyways, she doesn't have the money to fix and basically the auto place offer her 600 for it, then minus 200 for storage/diagnostics. Well she decided she's giving it to me. So worst case scenario, anyone know how much an engine would be to replace? Or if it's an easy job to rebuild the old one? This thing has like 90,000 on it doesn't have a spot of rust and only a very small dent on the rear right door. It's going to become my play toy :)

Thanks guys. And if anyone is willing to rebuild it or put a motor in send me a p.m.

Well, we got it back at my dads today. Jesus this thing is beautiful. We're going to use transmission oil to try and free up the motor since thats what the problem is. Pops says he should have it started in a few days, but I'm not holding my breath.

Well good news. MOTOR ISN'T LOCKED UP. Dad got it to start and run for a few seconds. But it's making a really loud noise that he hasn't figured out yet. And one of the oil cooler lines is busted he says.

Any ideas on the noise. Just says it's super loud clacking almost like it's a bearing he says.

What do you mean by that? And pretty much everything can be replaced as long as it didn't blow up literally right lol?

Can I pull another running 4.0 and swap the intake and everything off of the 2001 4.0 and put it on a 4.0 from an XJ or something else?

Pull the motor out. Put it on an engine stand. Drain oil. Pull heads. Turn over. Pull crank. Put new one in. Put heads back on. Put back in truck. Go far as you can. Crank kits aint near as much $$ as a whole motor, but LOTS more work. You get the crank, rod&main bearings, and most of the gaskets in the kit. From what youre sayin, youve got a rod knockin, right? Better make sure first. If it had a busted oil line and they just ran it till it quit, you aint got much for a motor there, and would be better off to buy one from the junk yard or a buddy on here. Theres other stuff in there that wasnt gettin lubed either, and is probably wore down to a frazzle. I'm just sayin if you got very little $$, you might can get by with a crank kit for now. $150 or so, IDK exactly.. ;D

Oh, crank kit dur. Thought you meant a stroker kit for a second lol. Yes I am looking at all options right now though. Would like to just have it rebuilt but bored out to at least 4.2 maybe more.

Yeah dude I know..........I ran mine to 280 in one xj and 220 in another and sold em both at around 800 bux running and driving. I'll NEVER sell another running vehicle for less than 1000 though. But I'd like this to be something I can drive around town but still have fun in. So far I'm only.... 0.00 into it lol. But I owe my lady the 300 it cost for storage/towing/diagnostic since I said I'd pay for it. But hey, 300 bones. The engine core is worth that lol. If I get this up and running good......then the Dodge is going up on autotrader and ebay. :/
