so i had some questions about rockwells and i figured id ask. looked around and got a little info but would like to hear from regular joes who have em rather than a company trying to sell me crap.
heres my questions,
with the hubs flipped can you run 40-44's down the road and still be 102"?
how hard would it be to fab up my own four wheel disc brakes? keep in mind i have access to table and tube lasers, welders, mills and lathes and am very compitent in running all of them.
i know one axle is wider than the other with the hubs flipped, which one is it and who makes custom shafts if i cut them down?
thanks all!
talk to wildtime!!!!! his # is posted all over here call him and ask him! he is the rockwell man!!

i was kinda looking for some diy info, not a shop selling stuff (no offense meant). not saying dave is just a salesman, but i know giving out trade secrets and spending time on the phone with somebody just looking to build thier own stuff isnt the best buisness decisions. im just not looking to waste his time and act like im buying everything. id rather build it myself.
Most likely your gunna have to narrow them to drive on the road,(without fuss)
What are you thinking for a tranfer/ also brakes is the easy part go get or make a caliper bracket to fit 1 size rotor and put it together or buy the kit?
Any tire protruding will get you a ticket!
It sounds like your wanting a street truck and most of the trucks 2.5 ton are far from it. but throwing money at it will eventualy get what you want. Most people are just like me im not done yet but im gunna drive mine ticket or not, becouse i do belive there is a point to made to the law!
Im gunna do everything just like the lawbook says. and argue every inch
In my experiance if u don't drive like an idiot, and yer tires aren't sticking out too far, you'll b ok on the road.
Are you going with 2.5 tons or 5tons? lets start there
Have you done any reserch on chucks?
with the hubs flipped can you run 40-44's down the road and still be 102"?
Yes you can with both 2.5 and 5 tons, back spacing is the key. i would shot for 100" personally. im at 96-97" with 11" of back spacing with the hubs out on 5tons using a 15" wide rim and a 19.5 wide tire. now the rpm is going to suck with a 40"tire, but that is another story
how hard would it be to fab up my own four wheel disc brakes?
Not hard at all, just a little brain power and some mesuring, and commen sence
i know one axle is wider than the other with the hubs flipped, which one is it and who makes custom shafts if i cut them down?
The front is wider than the back no matter if the hubs are fliped in or out. i believe the rear is 2" perside narrower than the front, i may be wrong on this #.
you can narrow or widen a front 2.5ton 7.5" inches and just use either another short or long side axle. randy at oem, gearhart, or maybe todd at trb machine could help you out with custom shafts beyond that.
the only other thing i have to say is use the power of google.

dont keep it a secret lol i found out on my truck that has gm eaton axles that with the 20 inch rim rollers i have under it the tire measures 40 x 10 wide the tire almost hits the leafs at full turn i dont know if this applys to rockwells but im thinkin so i found some rims off a street sweeper that have about a 5 inch offset those on the front and the stock offset flipped outwards on the back lines the tires up real close to being straight as far as brakes id use the drums that are on them if yer gunna run it on the street these were designed for a heavy load ya can adjust a drum for zero drag = less drag on the drive line the disc brakes would be trick and easy enough to do ive been lookin at the scrap yard for some rotors to make work on mine found a couple options but gotta figure out what they came off from there is lots of kits out there but who has 5 g to spend right??

i thought about it, but there so heavy that i think it would be suicide in a mud pit lol. and thier air over hydro. as for wheels, im either going with red barn customs or im going to make my own, since i have a cnc plate laser to use at my fingers. id like to make a few sets of wheels and tires up for different things, prob buy my street wheels tho. as for brakes, thats my biggest issue. if i could find a way to make them easy and cheap, i would just have a bunch of parts made up and they would be available to all my friends at cost. like said, who has $2200 for brakes and if i can help fellow boggers out from them helping me out id be more than happy to do it. ill also be doing a complete wrightup with pics to help others if i do go this route.
look at chucks all the info is right there! its been there. all you have to do is look it up! go to your gm dealer get some caliper brackets, and weld them on. then you have to go get a rotor and drill it do match the pattern on the back of the hub. if you want more info youll have to go look it up, it just to much info to tell about. and sorry if i was being a jerk but info is all there and i had to find it all my self. and that is the only place you will find it! anything else and youll have to try it your self. SORRY again.... f 550 rotors are supposed to fit, i think(cant remember) or NAPA part # NB4885858 you can try that, but at $114.00 i dont think its cost effective to mangle up id go to the junk yard! and you can use stock brakes and they work but eather use just fronts or or just rears, OFFROAD USE ONLY, and it will work!
I under stand the diy deal, its the only way i can afford to build my truck to.
if you only knew the hours i got into research on some projects, it would blow you mind.
Street brakes on rockwells are fun. the issue is not with the rear axle but the front do to the knuckle.
since you have acces to cnc lazer, i would cut a rotor that is 1/2" thick in the diamiter you want. while you are at it make a pad spacer ( may want 2 per caliper) to make up the diff in rotor thickness. For calipers, for ease sake i would try and find a fixed 2 or 4 piston caliper(no pins to hang up). the only thing i hate about the F350 superduty caliper is the fact the pins like to stick if the truck has sat, other wise they arnt a bad caliper. on a side note we have been using gm metric calipers on a lot of projects -food for thought on a pinion brake
Do you have acces to a press brake? it might make for a cleaner install.

yes a person can find lots on google and other searchs BUT REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE AND INFO FROM PEOPLE THAT HAVE ALREADY DONE THE WORK IS alot more valuabe to me not just a spec sheet or stuff like how much they sell parts for thats what this post is for i think anyway ??? i would have spent hours at the parts counter tryin to id the rotors i found now ive got a idea what they might have been or what i can make work
just curious, but what steel are rotors made out of? i can get any steel imaginable, but im pretty sure A36 plate would be good, thats what flywheels are made of i guess. once i get everything set in place, i think im guna have a bunch of extra parts made up in case anybody else wants to do this. i mean its not really rocket science to put brakes togather, but having a direction to go from helps a ton with saving money lol. im sorry, but $1100 for each axle is completly outragous for brakes.
ok just go to pirate4x4.com and look up 2.5 ton brakes.
or just gunna have to borrow a 2000 chevy rotor and e350 rotors and run 4 bolts. but ive learned my lesson on listening to bad advice, me im gunna pull the hub and take the think with me toi the junk yard with. but the rotors are so small anyway, I dont like that so the bus rotors, and 550 calipers would be better. eather way there has got to be a better way!
So my buddy has a waterjet and im thinking why cant he cut me nice fat rotors? and use a caliper bolt it on like the usa 6x6 ones it would work good. anyone with any ideas!
