i got a 1980 chevy with a dana 60 front with 44, i had to replace gear box on it so i went to cross over steering and got a 2wd gear box hooked it all up and it wouldnt move no more then a inch then it lock the pump up and the belt just spun so i made sure it was tight and it was then did it again still did it so i got a brand new one put it on and still did it so got a different 4wd gear box and went back to stock steering and it turn a little better but still does it anyone have a answer for this
did you get the lines crossed some how?
no hooked them up the same way when took off but it did that when i got the truck soo ill switch them and see tomorrow
Does it do it both ways or only turning one direction? If it only does it turning in one direction your pitman arm is not on center with your gear box.
thats it all the gearbox had there own pitman arms on it so i dont think that its funny sometimes it turns both way and then all a sudden ti stops even when im driven it its still hard to turn it
if you have a steering stabilzer make sure its not bad.

Pump could be bad as well, have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you have your hand on the pressure line and see if it is getting pressure when it stops turning.
no cant be that its a BRAND NEW pump from advance auto but ill try everthing you guys think whats it could be i just ran out out of idea on what it could be

ill check it out tomorrow
is the metal around the rag washer getting snagged on the gear box. just an idea
check your u-joints,on your front axles. they might be set up.i went threw this with a truck i had. i put new pump, new steering gear box.and it still did it.pulled the front axles, and found the u- joints, were set up. just something to check, just trying to help ya out.
With the front axle on jack stands and truck turned off does it turn back and forth freely? It should be fairly smooth here, before even worrying about the pump. If not, take the draglink off pitman arm and make sure gear box isnt binding. The teeth on worm gear can chip, break and bind easily. Make sure each knuckle turns back and forth freely too.
have ya checked the fluid level? i know its kinda obvious but it wont work if there aint enough fluid
Raise the front end off the ground, and with the motor off, turn the steering wheel back and forth all the way from lock to lock while you have a buddy watch inside the pump, sounds like it might be full of air. When it stops burping it should be ok, fill it back up with fluid. Otherwise, grease all your fittings real good, and if you find a fitting that wont take grease, that might be where the problem is. Make sure you dont have a kink in one of the hoses. Otherwise, most likely its the steering box. ;D
ok i did this right before i had to go to work, i jack the truck up and turn the key so i could turn the wheel and it turn easy so easy i could do it with one finger then started it and move it back and forth a couple of time work like it should lowerd it back down started acting up again
Pump is junk or you got a sticky valve. there may have been crud in the box you put on and it could have jacked it up.

x2 Just because something is new dont mean its good.
Ok thank I'll go get a new one and see if that works
mine did the same and i drove it forever thast way get musles or put a new pump on it! you got some garbage in one of the ports and it aint gunna come out so replace it.
As Jeepinjohn said also U joints binding will cause all kinds of funky steering issues, I had a thread on here a few years ago about my suburban I thought it was death wobble. When I turned getting on the freeway for example it would be hard and then it would just give and shoot me back and forth almost losing control...very scary p00
they look to be good gunna unhooked steering and take the tires off and move them by hand to see if there good
whats the best way to flush the lines and gear box out
i think your sposed to un hook one of the lines and keep adding fluid and just let it drain oout open line
You might try taking the fitting out of the back of the pump. In there is a spring and piston. On the end of the piston is a screen. Make sure you watch how you take it out. Its crucial to put it back the same way(found out the hard way) and make sure the screen it clear.
If you have lock-out hubs, are they locked in or something? And let me ask you this: Will the wheels turn fine when youre sittin stil, but wont turn when youre rollin?

Take the return hose off at the pump and let it pour into a bucket. Plug the fitting on the pump, keep pourin fluid into the top

if it is how hard are ball joints to replace never done one before
there hard if u need a hand i can help
the 60 should be a king pin never seen a chevy 60 that was ball joint..
yea it is a king pin 60
If it has kingpins, might need to pb blast it and work it some to get it freed up. Could be rusted up from muddin and not bein greased, maybe.. Is that at all possible..? And sometimes ya have to work extra hard to make real sure that a fitting is actually takin grease even though it doesnt really seem that important at the time... ;D
i fixed it yay!!!
what was it ???
Ya spill the beans.
idk, i took the pump off and took it back to advance auto got a new one, plus belt and hoses put it all on made sure no p00 fell in new pump tighten the belt as hard has i could and it work so it was ether the pump or hose was no good sure was a lot of money to get it fixed
Ok good now grease the front end real good. You catch what I was sayin bout them kingpins..?
yea im going to make sure everything is good and greaed up this weekend ill be replacing front bearings and seals
kinda just spray everything down with pb and make sure everything gets grease real good
