Title: Cleaning up the gears...
Post by: CBakes on May 16, 2011, 02:25:56 AM
I'm cleaning up some new to me axles and wonder what you guys use or how you go about cleaning out the differentials. Brake clean? Mineral spirits? Dawn dish soap ( kidding )

mineral spirits would be the best. i tore down my old 44 hd and every greasy part went into the parts washer and got sparkly clean and regreased.  as for the axle housing all i did was spray ALOT of heavy duty industrial degresser in it and let it sit then power wash the whole thing out

Thanks for the info. I guess in terms of primer and paint for the exterior too, what primer and durable paint does everyone use too.
