Option 2: 205

would like input on this i got a choice of 208 and a 205 tcase going in a dodge bb 383/727 4.10 gears runnin 44s which case shud i use? would like to hear from some guys that have built dodges.
208 is a good case but 205 is gonna be the best bet. 205 is bomb proof
44's and a big block I would run a 205 if given the choice. 4.10 gears are gonna suck with 44's though!
I'm a chevy guy, but 4:10s and 44s are gonna be real bad with a 205......208 has a lower gear ratio....but 205 is bomb proof like stated above.. really you need 5:38s or lower to run 44s
IM running a 208 with 44s and 4:88 gears
I'd say 208 is fine 500 hp or less.
heres some reading
The strength of the NP208 is not great, but it's not terrible. The main problem with the transfer case is the case itself. The Aluminum case is not the pillar of strength, like an iron case is. Like all the chain driven cases, the case can break under severe duty. Another with the case is the stretching of the chain. Although you don't have to worry too much about the chain stretching, this will happen even in a vehicle that does not see regular off-rod use. The stretching will occur over a long period time , let us say, several years and hundreds of thousands of miles.
With all that information the NP208 can be used for moderate off-road use. Just don't expect it to hold up to severe rock crawling action, for very long
ive ran both and i run 44 cut boggers with 513 gears . i would recommend the 208 if it were me just for the weight loss and better gearing andf very easy to find and cheap
The dodge version(which I assume he's using) are not as easy to come across as chevys.
Chevy guy also, 208 gets my vote, they are easier to find than 205s are...and you cant beat that Low range of 2.62.
But.........why are we leaving the NP241 out??......I am sure dodge used that in pre 1993 D150's and some D250's........and its got alittle better low range of 2.72
IF you want a divorced 205, then look in a pre 74 dodge as they still had divorce mounted cases. 1975-79 will ALL be factory full time 203s.
1980-late 80's D 150's will have 208's and some D250's might have come with them. All the D350 1 tons came with the 205.
the d series never came with any tcase...... they were 2wd lol. the w series is 4wd. the 241 started in 88 and was used up to 02 but 94 and up are drivers drop. the problem with the dodges are the drive shaft angles with lifts over 6".
I like 208 for everything!
I ran a 208 with my 362......worked great.....my buddy has a solid roller, high compression 496( 700hp) with 46" tractors and never broke his 208, but he did chip all the ring gear teeth in his 14 bolt with 5:13's.....just proves what some people think is weak is sometimes not the case......
with the better ratio and a lighter case, I think it outweighs the strength of the case with what you are running. You are gonna want the extra range too with that gear/tire combo. I run 4.10s with 35s and a 208.
tim what kind of 44s are thay?
another thing i forgot to mention when runnin 38s on this trk with a 208 the motor was sreamin with no tire speed had to hit drive for wheel speed in low lock
i would stay with the 208. you have cut hogs thay do pull the rpm down.
well i put the 208 in if i break it i always got the 205 for a spare ++peace
So on dodges, can u just swap in a 205 on a trans that had a 208 bolted to it?? Like a direct bolt on, no adaptor?
208/205/241 all the same adaptor
Just on dodge???? Chevys not like that . Right?? loll
