Title: no compression in one cyl and its leaking out the intake valves
Post by: Crazymays77 on July 02, 2011, 08:19:43 PM
ok just got this motor back together had to get a head for it. i lapped the valves with the grinding compound and everything looked great. but once i got it all back together and did a compression test i have 0 on 1 cyl. so i blew air into the cyl and its coming out the intake. so i plan to pull the intake cam and see if i can get it to seal up if so then i'm guessing something is wrong with the cam? whats your opinion?

idk could it be a bad lifter or valve spring maybe broke valve??

i dont think its a broke valve i turned the motor over and looked down the spark plug and i can see the intake valves when they are open. im thinking its a lifter or valve spring. going to pull that cam off and see if it stops leaking then go from there. just dont want to have to pull the head and get a new gasket again.

wonder if i can use the head gasket still?

get a new gasket, their compression sealed why risk your motor over one gasket?

thats true and its only 40 bucks. just have to find one again. went to 2 different auto zones to find one.

screw auto zone ive only had bad luck with them i go to advance auto parts they are by far best people to deal with

if you havea  felpro gasket you could reuse it if you dident run it.

there felpro gaskets. well i pulled the cams and it stopped leaking so i'm thinking lifter or spring issue. I made a air fitting with a spark plug so i can put air to that cyl and hope to take the springs out. maybe there is something under it or something and its causing it to leak. lets hope anyways.

is this on your kia?  not knowing how kia set up on the valve train, dose it use any type of lifters that mite be pump up holding valve open, until its running to comperess the lifter.

yes the kia. its only one cyl 2 intake valves. why would it only be on one cyl? idk maybe thou could be anything.

well I pulled the cams again this morning. i'm checking the lifters and by what i am reading if I can move the plunger on the lifter its bad. so i went thru all the lifters and replaced them with ones that dont move. but i dont understand that since if the cyl i am having problems on has bad lifters then wouldnt it open late and it wouldnt leak right? oh well gonna go see what happens now with the cams in.

is it always leaking? from my knowledge if it opens late it closes late. where it staying open longer then others and when piston move ups for compression since its bad it leaks out??

it always leaks if the cams are installed. I rotated the motor over by hand and would blow air in it with the compressor here and there. always leaks until i pull the cams off then it stops leaking. I just thought about it more and I'm thinking maybe one of the lifter plungers is stuck out so its pushing the valves all the time. replaced them with some other ones i have and going to see what happens. wish me luck.

Im guessin theres no way to adjust the valves on this? If thats the case then you have to check the installed height of the valve which is the distance from the part of the spring that is in contact with the head to the tip of the valve. On these non-adjustable heads the installed height is critical, if its too high the valve will be held open or will open early, causing the problem youve described. If the installed height is too high, simply grind the tip of the valve off until it is the correct measurement.

yup there not adjustable. well i changed a few of the lifters out on the intake side. got cyl 2 to work but now 3 and 4 dont. wtf. so now i have to change out the lifters on 3 and 4. guess i should have left them alone. lesson learned. just dont feel like messing with it right now. going to take a nap and work on it later today or mow lawn. at least i found the problem and i dont have to pull the head off.
