Title: grinding in the rear end

i have a 99 mustang, and i started to get some grinding in the rearend and from the looks of things the pads and roters seem to be fine. it almost sounds like a rock is stuck in there. i only here this at slow speeds and as soon as i get out of second gear it goes away. anybody have any ideas on what this might be?

Do you have rusted dust shields on the rear rotors? They will rust out and bend resulting in scraping noises at low speeds.

Jack up the rear end and have a buddy put it in gear while you listen, should be able to tell where its comin from. If you dont hear anything, probably an axle bearing. Shake the wheels up and down, got any play? Theres always some in and out movement, thats normal.

maybe a dry u-joint. make sure when you lift the rear support with jack stands and block the front wheels, and watch to see if the drive shaft wobbles.

As an afterthought, yes it does look like thats what Im doin.. When you spin the back tires, point the vehicle in a direction that is safe so that if things go wrong you will have room to stop it,  and make sure NOBODY is standin in front of it. Use jack stands, block the front tires, and act like ya got sense when you do this and youll be fine. That means dont see if you can peg the speedo and all that!  ;D
