Title: turbo 350 problems
Post by: ROCK on August 12, 2011, 10:17:01 PM
had a "built" turbo 350 in my truck, ended up losing 3rd gear on my way to silver lake. not totally lost, it would engage randomly but then it would free rev/drop into 2nd. spent most of the time in 2nd. when i got back i pulled it and put a stock 350 in it with my same convertor while my other trans is getting rebuilt by a reputable builder. i flushed it out as much as possible along with lines and cooler. new filter and seals were put on too. it has been fine but over the last 75 miles or so it has started to act like the other trans and doing the same thing. well today i had to drive it to work and it spent maybe 5 miles in 3rd out of my 40 mile round trip. it shifts 1st, 2nd, reverse, neutral, and park just fine but it wont stay engaged or engage 3rd. the vacuum line is fine, not leaking or unhooked. i had the kickdown cable hooked up so when the pedal was to the floor it would kickdown. idk if thats right. the only thing i can think of is that the convertor is junk. any ideas? new trans is getting a new convertor and im pulling all the lines and cooler and making %100 sure that they are clean but if its something i did, i dont want to do it again.

Sounds like you got it all figured out...I would do the exact same thing and replace the converter and flush all the lines and cooler real real good. I would also replace the vacuum hose, it could have a chunk of p00 in it or be collapsing under high vacuum...even if you think it is good replace it, they are cheap!

put a new modulator in it also  if ya used the same convertor  in 2 trans with the same results  id say the convertor  is bad   and if the  kickdown cable is to tight it maybe  making it kick down when it dosent need to???

Whats the gears and tire size.  I know my dad went through 3 trannys in one of his trucks before he sold it. He had 342's and 40's and all that extra stress went right on the trans when he drove it down the road.

Rocks truck is a 3/4 ton, so he's probably got 4.10/ 4.56

Tires look like 35's.

First of all... new trans new converter... putting a used converter from a burned up trans into a good one is askin for trouble... all the p00 gets into it and will cause failure...   sounds to me like the kickdown cable needs adjustment, or low on fluid...   kickdown cable should be adjusted tight at full throttle

x2  reusing a converter is just asking for trouble.

Ya killed it by puttin the same convertor in the next one. The front pump was shot on the 1st one, thats why it wouldnt hold 3rd. When a 350 starts doin that, its done. When ya put the convertor thats full of shavings into the next one, that filled that next trans with shavins and now the front pump is goin on that one. You can NOT flush shavins out of a convertor without cuttin it open and washin thoroughly. Gonna have to start fresh and clean, flush lines and cooler completely, otherwise youll just keep havin problems. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, ya might can milk it awhile by droppin the pan and changin filter a bunch, but it wont last. Kickdown adjustment is simple, set it so its pulled very nearly all the way out when gas pedal is to the the floor. Vacuum modulator should be fine as set from factory, once you have a trans that aint tore up you can make minor adjustments with a pocket screwdriver inside the hole where the vacuum line goes on like 1/8-1/4 turn at a time or so till it acts like how ya want.
