Title: transfer case question
Post by: extricator1 on August 14, 2011, 05:09:08 PM
ok i`ve got a 99 chevy silverado z71 electronic 4x4
my question is when in 2 wheel hi should`nt the front driveshaft spin freely?
i know with manual t-case they do but not sure how the new crap works
if i jack up the front i can spin the wheels by hand and the driveshaft does not turn
it just seems wrong for the t-case to be working the front shaft when in 2 wheel !

Try jacking it up and stoping one tire from spinning and then spin the other one and I'll bet the shaft spins. The reason is you have full time hubs so the power is disconnected from the front drivetrain at the t case. If you had lock outs my guess is it wouldn't spin at all and since I've never seen a ifs truck with them I'd bet they all spin.

The 88-98 C/K & 98-2000 C/K classic trucks with the NP241 with conventional lever operated 4wd, I'm pretty sure their front driveshafts dont spin in 2wd.......................however your front axle shafts ( half shafts) will spin while in 2wd, but from the differential back nothing is moving.

The 96-up NP243 auto-trac electronic t-case..........is a different story, cant tell ya about that cause I have never owned a push button 4wd truck.......and never will.....for obvious reasons....

your 99-up (new body style chevys) offered an ALL WHEEL DRIVE setting with there push button 4x4.......offering 2wd........AWD.........4HI...N......4LOW.........

if your truck has AWD......make sure its in 2wd.......otherwise in AWD.......the front driveshaft and front axle will be engauged.........this AWD mode is just like the old 73-79 NP203 full time 4x4.

if possible, crawl under your truck.....and on the backside ([possibly front side on newer trucks) there will be a red and silver round metal tag........it will tell you the model of T-case your truck has.................when you find that out you can google it and read up on the T-case and its features and find out if yours is or isnt doing what it should be.

If the axle shafts are spinning and the shaft is connected via the differential how would you think the shaft wouldn't spin?

because when you put it back in 2x4 that little electric acuator in the front diff unlocks

I was under the assumption the actuator was in the side of the t case?

Its located on the front axle,

When its enguaged.........it pushes out both shafts inside the axle tube......which connect with your (half Shafts)...........then everything is locked in 4wd and spinning.

I see now. So maybe his is stuck in the engaged position. I just know on my 03 trailblazer it spun all the time.

i can jack up the front and spin the tires and the drive shaft does not turn, but i  cant turn the d-shaft by hand either so it leads me to believe that the transfer case is always engaged which i think is  stupid its creating more drag  = less milage

They will do this if it has auto 4x4, your trail blazer probably had auto 4x4 option, with this option it has no actuator in the front diff, they are like the Bravada, when auto 4x4 is selected when the computer detects the rear wheels slipping it will engage the front wheels in like 1/100th of a second. If a 90's - 2000's Chevy truck only has 4hi, 4lo, 2hi, 2low it will have an actuator in the front axle.

Yup auto on mine. And the reason you can spin the tires(in guessing) is it has a open differential. That's my I say hold one tire in place and see what happens.

Okay............but WHAT push button 4x4 ranges do you have?   2wd......4HI ...N ...4LOW..........if thats all you have........it might have to do with having an electronic T-case....VS.......a manual lever operated NP241 of the same year.

that........AUTO.........setting must be for AWD....all wheel drive..........try selecting 2wd, and then try jacking up tires, and rotating the front D-shaft.

If it still is locked.........then maybe your switch or somthing electrical is worn out and its stuck in AWD.........or it might be just the design of that type of T-case.

I'd find the ID tag on that T-case get the model number off it, and google it, and read up on the characteristics of that type of T-case.

I think auto might be for if the computer detects wheelspin it activates 4wd for a few seconds, but Im only guessin..

Yes that's exactly what it does. Great for drifting on snow Covered roads lol

So maybe the sensor or the actuator for that is screwed up and thats why the driveshaft stays locked in..?
