Post by: bogginjess on September 17, 2011, 06:35:21 AM
well as its obviously getting colder outside, its a sign that winter is only a few months away  ==cold so whats everyone's favorite tires for when the snow starts flying?

That kinda depends on your definition of snow tires? They make dedicated winter tires such as the blizzak and they are great on icy roads and packed snow because of all the little sipes in them however when they get in deep snow I find them no better than an all season radial.

We have a long dirt driveway that never gets plowed, we are also out in the country and travel a lot of roads that never get plowed or plowed last. I there for prefer an aggressive all terrain, last winter we ran Cooper ST tires and bought a new set a few months ago to use this winter.

When in deep snow if I spin them they clear out like a mud tire and bite, the Coopers do fantastic in deep snow but on slippery icy roads they are no match for a Blizzak but the Blizzaks would probably leave us stuck in our driveway. Next winter I am going to run the Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs, been hearing a lot of good reviews about them, all around good tire from what I hear.

I have a set of the Duratracs and love them, I've yet to have a problem, plenty of sipping and pretty good at self cleaning in the snow and mud, pretty quiet on the pavement too...

x2

My parent live in Traverse City, they like the blizzaks on all wheel drive sedans, but with a heavier vehicle I always ran bfg all terrains and liked them.  We even found with a 2wd s-10 that a snow tire like snow kings worked well also, as long as there was a couple hundred pounds of sand in the back.

Theres a big difference between SNOW TIRE.............and somthing thats good on ICE

Any basic Mud tire brand will do good on (in) SNOW.....it will cut right through it, ..... in really deep packed snow.... however.........somtimes it can cause a vehicle to shudder trying to cut through it....I had that problem myself on state land with 33's trying to cut though 2ft of packed snow.

ICE.......is a different story...........your not trying to cut through anything........your trying to keep your vehicle from sliding, while still maintaining traction.   A basic ALL TERRAIN Tire will work well on ICE because it puts more tread to the icey surface than a mud tire would with only lugs.

The best snow tire that I have had were a set of Pirelli Lite Truck Snows.  Cant remember the name but they on't make them any more.  I used them suckers for 7 or 8 years before they finely went bald.
