What do you do to improve your 4x2 for the winter? I've thought of as much as adding an air locker (But think it would cost too much money and would only get me un-stuck). But I usually put 2 pieces of wood in to hold a number of bags of pea gravel or dirt in place for the winter.
For those of you who are 4x2 what do you do?
Or are most of you 4x4?
man, my 2 wheel drive thinks its a 4.
3/4 ton chevy with a topper and good tires, and a basket of chains and clevices for weight/recovery. snow shovel and jumper cables.
never needed pulled out.
my dad always ran 2 wheel drive trucks up in traverse city, he would buy softener salt 3 months ahead and keep it in the back of the truck, and throw snow tires on it. worked like a champ.
Find a used water bed mattress on craigslist for cheap and fill it about 1/4 full and let it freeze, it will be all dead weight right over your axle.
i used to just throw a bunch of sand in the back and leave it there all winter, but i've used tractor weights, blocks, and all kinds of dead weight before... just make sure it can't move a round and don't over do it, there's a point where it starts making it worse instead of better

Thing with blocks and weights imagine hitting a ditch or tree doing 60mph and having those items fly through your back window, I am doing either sand or the water bed myself this winter and if that dont work I guess I will have to pull my little lever that says 4x4 ==roll
The waterbed idea is genius. I'm going to look to see what I have lying around first. I was also thinking a tonneau would be nice for the winter at least.
last winter i saw a guy stuck in a s-10 and had blocks over the rear axle hit the ditch and tore his bed all up

unless its sucured also how do you think a big block of ice would be any safer?
I stick with a front wheel drive car with a good running v-6 with traction control around for winter use! Nothing better (besides a 4x4) then a good running front wheel drive car with a good set of tires. (again thats my opinion)
Whatever you do stay in your vehicle if you are in an accident!

my old 2wd we just drove it harder and it did good with some cheap a/ts... we drove all the dirt roads around us just drive wfo... most of my 4x4 dont get locked in untill 2wd wont move! lol but I know a good load in the back will make ya go farther! when we hual wood its 4x4 to the woods and 2wd on the way out..

Tires are king too. Goodyear Assurance tripletreds. Best ==censor tires I've had yet.
Nice snow tires and some weight, and A good driver will get you any and everywhere
I just put good tires all around, dont believe in adding weight to the backend, just makes it that much more weight to stop and id rather beable to stop than go.

Got A Lil Sketchy Last Year So I Think Imma Break Down And Get A Set Of Trxus Mt's On The Back, Bought A Set Of Em For My Dads 2wd V6 Ram 2 Years Ago And Its Done Great For Him And Surprisingly They Havent Wore That Much At All
i used to deliver papers @ 3 a.m before the plows / other carriers were out to beat down the snow and such, i used a 95 grand cherokee, was supposed to be 4wd, but i blew the chain out of the case like.. 5 years ago or so, so i finished cutting the chain outta the case. i never put anything in the back of mine, just some good tires, and some good driving skills got me through 3 winters just fine. jeep still rattles along, as a winter beater still.

Just don't run them when its over 70 outside, the rubber is soft it wears out faster.
