Title: straps vs chains
Post by: BUDGETBOGGER03 on October 08, 2011, 03:52:36 PM
alright guys i have always heard evryone say to use a recovery strap when yanking some one out and have been told tht straps are better then chains. But im just being curious trying to learn what makes a strap better or safer then a chain i know tht a strap stretches but it just seems like chain would be stronger then a strap.if either break they could kill u

i could also hit you with 5lbs of strap or 20 lbs of chain.   the strap is made to stregth and then recoil for a pop up and pull  methed and are rated      and yes you can get to big or to little of a strap also.

chains are also rated  most ppl dont buy a high grade  chain

the straps are easyier on both of the trucks at the same time    than a solid snap when you come to the end of a chain also.

the straps and tow ropes have an elastic stop to them that chains don't have, the chains hit hard when you jerk and are more likely to do damage or break than straps or ropes are

chains are not rated for impacts, like when you jerk a truck out, straps are.  chains are good for a steady working load, and for high wear straps are for high impact.  so if you are dragging logs through the woods, use a chain.  If you are trying to pull your buddies truck out of the mud, use a large enough strap for the truck.

*******Without good safe pull points, neither straps nor chains are safe!*******

read this, very good info..

FYI - without proper and secure pull points the strap/chain is just about useless.

lets say they dont have a front tow hook, wrapping a strap around the  front axle and running it back through itself good? bad?"

is good..
better would be to strap the frame..
helps reduce movement of the towed rig..
yea.. body sway still happens to a trailered rig.. this minimizes the tail wagging the dog effect

Chains just brake parts. I watched at an event a guy jerking a guy out with a chain, bent his frame to shitt. Bent it so bad that it turned the leaf spring shackles, bent the tow hooks, and tore the bolts through the frame that held th hooks on. Not to mention, if it broke, it would be alot more devastating than a strap.

and thats another reason not to use bolt on tow hooks, if you want to use hooks like that WELD them on.

Chains are not meant to be jerked... these people were idiots.  A steady even load pull, a properly sized chain works great.  But usually that is not the case when talking about mud bogs... so straps are where its at.
