10 bolts are slightly easier to find but pretty much the same not to mention from the knuckle out they are interchangable, minus the big bearing D44 spindles.

10 bolt front axles  will be easier to get parts for............1978-1991

Whereas dana 44's havent been used by GM since 1977.

strenght wise they are very close, the 44 might have a slight edge in housing strenght, but dont quote me on that.

I've had both axles, and both worked well for me.

The axle tubes are actually thicker on a 10 bolt but a D44 has 30 spline shafts vs the 10 bolts 28 spline...however in 1989-1991 in Suburbans and Full size Blazers they used a 30 spline 10bolt, I think they offer the best of both worlds and for a cheap axle you cant do any better.

I guess it all depends on how they are being used..........I've never run any tire size bigger than 35 on my axles........so maybe thats why mine never broke.

these axles werent meant to be paired up with 40 inch tires.............which I suspect is where most of the problems mentioned come from.

the only difference between the 1/2 ton and 3/4 tons was just the 3/4 tons had the bigger hubs and are 8 lug

This is only true for the solid axles, the 3/4 ton IFS axles are stronger than the 1/2 ton ifs axles and have a bigger ring gear and housing, ect.
