Title: NP 205 spline count
Post by: 84silverado on October 14, 2011, 03:20:48 PM
how many splines are on a NP 205 out of a 79' 1/2 tons chevy.  right now it hooked up to a turbo 350 of the same year but im wanting to get a turbo 400 at an auction coming up and im wondering how many splines are on it. thanks.

32 spline tcase output i believe, unless its fixed yoke.

th400 has 32 splines
th350/700r4 has 27 splines

so you would have to change the input for the tcase from 27 to 32 spline, or find a 205 of a th400, OR find a 205 off a 81-87 4spd, as they were 32 spline too. not sure if the 205 was offered on them, but they were 32 spline. maybe matt, chevynut7387 could give some input.

Okay first off................are you sure you have a 350 turbo hooked to a NP205 in your 79 chevy??..............I have to ask, because GM didnt offer that combo in 79, all auto trans 4x4's came with the FULL TIME NP203. All stick trans came with the 205.

If you buy this 400 trans at auction....................you'll have to look for a 1980-91 NP205, 32 spline. From 1980-1991.........GM offered the NP205 only behind 1 ton k30 trucks, and only with 2 transmissions choices...........the 400 turbo, and the SM465 4pd manual.

If you get this 400 trans...............the easiest route I see it.............would be to get a NP208 out of a 81-87 3/4 ton truck that had a 400 trans in it......................the 400 turbo 208's will be ALOT easier to find  (because more K20 trucks were built, compared to K30 trucks)   than the NP205 will be. Plus it will have a better low range than the 205 has.

yes i am absolutely positive that its a turbo 350, it has the square pan with one of the corners on an angle. ive bought parts for it and i have another 350 on the garage floor from another 79 and they match up perfectly, same thing. and there is no adapter to the 205. and id would rather have my 205 case over any other case anyday. so i guess i gunna have to find a manual truck with a 465 and put it in my truck. thanks guys
