Title: Project: Mutt
Post by: 4x4fun on October 22, 2011, 12:11:40 AM

I really wish i woud of done this a long time ago, but as they say better late then never...  This has been my on going project for just over 3 years now...  It started life as a 78 Chevy suburban half ton that had been previously wheel had in the Rocky Mountains, not a straight body panel on it but solid frame.. I had a buddy make a deal with me to scrap the body ( cuz he didnt like it ) and he would hook me up with a cab ( 2 door ) and a set of 3/4 ton axles.. Seemed to be a good deal..

(http://i564.photobucket.com/albums/ss87/4x4mutt/Mutt/mutt011.jpg) (http://i564.photobucket.com/albums/ss87/4x4mutt/Mutt/mutt011.jpg)

This is what we ended up with..  Over the course of the next couple months it got 4in springs in the from and a custum junkyard pack for the rear...

After a couple times out like this, with 4 people packed in things got tight leaving the idea of a 4 door cab behind...  A little digging and searching resaulted in finding an 84 chevy 1 ton factory 4 door truck fresh from texas that was bought for the motor..  So i purchesed the cab from it..

(http://i564.photobucket.com/albums/ss87/4x4mutt/Mutt/DSCF0069.jpg) (http://i564.photobucket.com/albums/ss87/4x4mutt/Mutt/DSCF0069.jpg)

after a little modifaction it sat nicly on the burban frame..

Next was the void on the back, needed a bed of some sort so i tought about it and came up with a drawing of what i wanted.. Had a freind of a friend hook us up with enough to build it outa old diamond plating.. come out just as i wanted.. thanks big frank..

More to come...

its been alot of work but well worth it and to think ya started building a "trail  rig"     i still think we shoulda put a nother 2 door cab on it backwards to the red one but   it stillcame all together pretty good  i still remember the looks on peoples faces the first time out at waterman rd  bog  applaudd applaudd applaudd applaudd applaudd applaudd applaudd applaudd applaudd applaudd applaudd  oh and no pics of the giant saw horse hahahahahahahahahaah

Heres a continuation...

As Big Frank said, at this point in the build i had just thought about mud bogs.. Opened up a hole new world of fun.. This is also about the time i had my frist mounds.. which lead me to find my weak link, the dana 44 front axle...

After several broken Ujoints in the axle shafts, 1 set of spider gears, it was time to upgrade to a Dana 60 front...

Took a duelly and coverted it to single wheel..

Now that the axels seem to be holding up its time to retire my ol'wore out stock 400 for a little more HP..  Ive been slowly building a sbc, finally have all the parts to put it togather just need to find the time and have a trans build..

Ive left out lots of little things but this is the basics so far.. I can say ive had alot of fun with this project and look foward to making it bigger and badder !

Got my trans thats going behind it sent off to a builder, should have an idea of what its goin to take here very soon i hope..
Also got the headers on and ready to be piped into my stacks, thats happening tomarrow..  Going to look into new suspension bushings for the front end, mine are looken pretty rough for only being 3 years old...

Got to see my trans all ripped apart, thats gonna require a bit of parts to make it hold up but i feel confadent ive got the right guy on it...  Headers are install and piped to muffers, sounds pretty good but not very loud at all.. that should bee the law off my ass..  Hopfully take her out to Mounds tomarrow, make sure the drive shaft clears the headders under full flex...  More to came as she comes togather..

Got looken at the headder/exhaust job, for the drivers side headder right tight up against the oil filter... That cant be good.. Going to try the smaller filter to see if that gives me room, if not im goin to have to remove the oil cooling ( i wanna call it a sending uint ) thing thats inbetween the oil filter and block..  Almost looking like im not goin to be able to run the GM oil cooling package i found...

i was wonderin how they would fit in there   lookin at the oil cooler kit looks like a short filter and the adapter is bout as tall as the long filter by itself   pa said he thought there was another version that mounts the filter up under the hood on the inner fender or where ever it mounts ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

the remote oil filter might almost be a good idea, so its not baken right next the headder..

A small filter fit with about 1/4 in of clearance..

Yea it kinda does, but untell i can pull the pan off the oil sending unit thing has to stay...  kinda why i like the remote oil filter deal..

I did find some body lift kits for a decent price, ive just got to figure out which kit is gonna work for a 4 door on a burban frame..

Tis a wrenching weekend, gotta make sure shes good for T-day...  Got new plug wire on and routed away from the headers.. Started on leaf spring bushings, got the drivers side done..  There wasnt much left as far as bushings, was almost metal on metal... Now on to the passenger side..

Hopfully by the end of december ill have everything around for this motor... need a rev limiter for sure, was informed by my trans man this TH400 will not panic shift..

Havnt up dated in a while....   New muffers worked out great, sounds much better now...   Pulled the distrubitor apart, found all the bushings around the weights non-existant.. replaced that and added a shim to tighten it up a little..  sooner or later ill buy a new one....   Droped my rare drive shaft off to have a new slip and yoke put on, got that back all nice and shiny...  also had to buy a new battery, should of bought and optima but not in the budget at the moment....

Thats about all i got for now, soon i will have a tow rig and trailor!

Upgrade time!!  Picked up a NP203 with 2 wheel conversion, 1410 yoke and all the goodies!..  ( Thanks Gears )  Had the drive shaft shop order a 1410 slip yoke for my rear drive shaft, finally getting rid of the 1350s...  now to get my back feeling well enough to get it in...
Also had to pick a new collem, musta hit hard at watermen road... Blew out the bottem bearing in the collem...

Prolly wont be boggen for a bit, had to go see a back doc...  my back is pretty jacked, might be it for the season but we'll see...

Well she survived another summer of beatings...  Did end up with a 4 wheel drive shifter issue, wouldnt lock into 4 low...  So i used some creative thinking and come up with a twin stick set up for the T case.. Now to get my a$$ out there and get it installed to make sure its gonna work for this weekend...  Toys for Tots mud bog, gotta love a bog with a good cause!!

nope, catching the eadge of the fenders... thats tomarrows project..
Not much as far as upgrades so far this winter beside a nice deck over trailer to hall it on..
Have been debating on what to do next, eather  build a Lomax 3.1 205 or 4 link/coil over the front axle..  Also looking into timing and springs/weights in the distributer, see if i can get er running a lil better..

Put a high volume water pump on it last weekend and plan on relocating the radiator to where the gas tank is now..  Also put a msd distributer in and found that the fly wheel egged on me, so thats this week ends project... already have a nice gear reduction starter for it..  Going to move the radiatior once the weather warms up enough to build an encloser and mounts for it...

Had the itch!!  got a holley 750 duel feed put on, holy smokes the differance!!  gonna make for a fun ride..   I have been building an encloser to relocate the radiator to the bed, its just about done...  goin to have a small shroud build and put a 1100 cfm fan on for trans coolers...  Ordered a 10 gallon fuel cell so i can remove the huge 28 gallon and put the radiator box in it spot...  next will be coolant lines, trans line and oil cooler lines..

Im bummed..  it appears ive taken the main bearing out of the bottem end...  runs really low oil pressure hot at an idol..  thought i had it fixed but no luck..  gonna pull the motor out and have the builder go through it and see if the crank need turn or what.. prolly end up missing the start of the boggen season unless i can come up with another block/motor..

ya live and learn..

I should have my block back from the machine shop very soon..  had to have crank turned, all new bearings, oil pump, cam, lifters and push rods..  basicly gotta fresh motor again this year..  Had some free time on my hands and made a couple mods, moved the radiator as noted in other posts.. Started pluming it in tonight, should work well..

Also sprayed the bed with bedliner and sunk a 10 gallon fuel cell in it.

completely different beast..  had some bugs to work out but that was expected..

Ran out at carsonville a couple weeks ago, ended up braking the inside shackle on the front passenger side spring...  So I upgraded to some nice 1/2 thick and a little taller then stock shackels... I don't think ill brake those but brought another issue to my attention, the volicity stack is hitting the cross member under full suspension unload so making a new one is my project this weekend is nothing else come up..

Gotta bunch of maintenance done that I had been slacking on..

What velocity stack? How could it hit the crossmember? Is the motor in the truck upside down? A velocity stack sits on top of the carb...  ;D

theres some fancy name for it  but  I think he means the front drive shaft  is hitting the crossmember   on the t case  nothing some  cut weld grind  wont fix

i added a shim between the adaptor and cross member to stop mine from hitting like you are works great
Title: Re: Project: Mutt
Post by: 4x4fun on June 30, 2013, 04:35:27 PM
I ended up fabing up a new crossmember, use 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 3/16 wall square tube..  made the frame attachment points longer and added a couple more bolts to hold it and the frame a little tighter..  works well..
Just about got the new motor build dialed in, had to order a little bit higher stall converter..  going from 1800-2100 to 2700-3000 due to a larger cam profile.. also had a spring and weight set coming from the distributer, going to try to do away with vacuum adv due to my carb having full vaccum on both ports..
Fine tuning, gotta love it!

I got the stall converter all installed and everything back togather but blew my back out the following day at work so no real test drive except to the gas station and back...  ive also been gathering parts to build a fresh BBC for the tow rig, that means im gonna have an extra bbc sitting in the garage...  might have to build that one for The Mutt, well see....

Here's an update, Stall converter worked out great! it brought that motor to life.. beat the hell out of it a few more times and kinda got put on hold tell the tow rig get finished which its about complete now..
Ive been debating on building something off the wall like a 377 or 438 for it, maybe even a set of boggers for the rear. gonna have to see how the tax man treats me.. I do know for sure ill be stepping up to full mechanical billet dis, msd 6-al box and blaster coil just to help a lil in the upper rpm range..
think sping!

Winter has been rough but its almost Mudden season..
Got a couple upgrades, a set of 39.5x18 boggers in great shape (Thanks Big Al) mounted up on a 15x12 rim.. Fit great!
Yanked out the MSD HEI and went with full billet mechanical distributer, 6 AL box and blaster coil.. seemed to really like that, spent the evening rejecting the carb. now its getting a hole lot more fuel and loving it.. probably have to order a set of pump cams to get it perfect.. It goes like it never has before...
Oh and I ordered a set of tube seal for my dana 60, try to keep the mud/sand/dirt out of my tubes..
A lil fine tuning and some trailer brakes and ill be ready for a killer boggen season!!

Had to do a lil more tweeking but was well worth it..  Got the ol'girl screaming well enough to brake another NP 203..  Has to be something with the shifting fork that engages the front drive, no biggie another is on the way..  Ive been looking at running a divorced 205, have found most of the parts to set it up just tryen to wait tell after the holiday weekend then the trans is coming out and apart. then will be converted to 2WD.

The end of the Boggen season has come..  no major carnage this year, just broke nuts and bolts..  upgrade to high energy motor and trans mounts, but the stacks off and put a nice set of uprights on..  gotta love that sound..  no major plans for it this winter, starting to collect parts for a mega..

Its getting to be that time of year again...  Ive managed to make some updates and upgrades over the last few months.. picked up a corp 14bolt, put all new bearings and seals on it with a mini spool in the middle due to wasted spindles on the old axle.. Figured id step into the next generation and picked up a FAST EFI kit, got that all plumbed and wired in then figured after 2 seasons of boggen on that motor it was time to freshen it up so out it came..  also fixed a couple coolent line issues I had last year, now its all hard pipe except for a couple spots for give and viberation absorption. More to come once the motor is finished up..
Looking forward to a good ol'muddy time!
