Title: SMURF
Post by: 84silverado on October 29, 2011, 10:12:50 PM
ive been on here for awhile and i fugured i might as well start something on my truck. its not much but its good enough for me, for now lol.

ok so when i first bought the truck it was in pieces. mostly bought it cause it was already lifted, and for $350 i couldnt let it go by. but no driveshafts, wasnt running, needed transmission line, needed smaller bolts and not 2 inches of washers to make a bolt work (can you say fustercluck). also some new shoes. so i got it in the garage and buttoned everything up then with the help of my dad i got it running. ran good but smoked alil bit, no biggie. it was just a 305 with some work. so i found some driveshaft, got them in and suprisingly it moved. it still has the stock 79' turbo 350 and NP 205 transfer case. the only thing that i didnt need to mess with when i got it was the axles, they are just 10 bolts with 3.08 gears.

so since ive got it and really started playing with it ive put new shoes under it, 36'' super swamper TSL radials with grooves. made and put on a GOOD rear tow point that has been prooven to work lol, the front is still in the works bout half way done. and last month i dropped a new heart in it and swapped out the worn out 305 for a built 350 pushing around 450 horse.

but soon i hope ill be putting in a manual trans with a creeper gear. a doubler 203/205 transfercase. more lift. bigger axles, thinking rockwells? then getting some tractors for it. and whatever else sounds good to me to make it better.

Just a heads up on putting the old stick behind kinda sucks. I have around a 450hp/460tq bbc 427 with a stick behind it. I love sticks but would never put one behind a high horse motor in a lifted truck. Mine hates anything under 2grand so taking off sucks. Once your going its great till you have to shift. The old sticks have no syncs between gears so you have to wait and loose wheel spin. Go with a well built auto with a stall.have fun ++peace

hahaha put "smurf this" on the tailgate. Sounds like a cool rig, I do agree on the sm465, you can ask 73chevytruck on here about it, you loose all your wheel speed between gears and that getsya stuck. but to each their own, I drive manuals all over but agreed if i was to build an all out mud bogger it would be a automatic. or a old prestomatic design like dodge had.

so ive been slacking lately cause of my accident with my ear so been in the docs for that and down at meps for the navy..... but! i got the old front axle out and i got the rocks laying underneath of it right now and today i went over to budd farm and did a few things and got myself a set of roller tires. dad brought home some scrap tubing from work from a job that had some left overs so i got that cut that got up and im gunna use for 8'' lift blocks so now ill have some room to flex and i wont have to shave anything hopefully now

Are you goin to brace those hangers so they dont fold over when you hit the mud? Otherwise lookin good nice start.
Title: Re: SMURF
Post by: 84silverado on April 13, 2012, 12:32:58 PM
The rear hangers have a plate on the inside of the frame so that its bolted to the frame and the plate is 8"long and 3.5" tall so its just as tall as the inside of the frame. The front hangers i used the stock braces from the backside of the stock hangers and i plated the inside of the frame. Well, plan on it anyways, ran outta plate. And i dont think that they will ever move but if they do then ill run something between them so they dont move around. Ill put up pictures later when i get home

Looks good but you need to add some gussets to the front hangers going back to the frame rails an add some structure to your shackles to keep them from twisting and folding. Other than that keep up the good work.
Title: Re: SMURF
Post by: 84silverado on April 23, 2012, 02:40:29 AM
Those shackles are fine the way they are the wont ever move with what im going to do with it. Im not monster truckin' like everyone else. The shackles are 1/2'' think cold rolled steel stock with 5" c-channel inbetween then. All welds are triple stichted. 1/2" bolts..... The front ill NEVER think twice about moving, cause if it does i WILL need a new truck. Its bolted to the stock hanger points, frontclip, and frame, Triple stitch weld all the way around. The tubing that the hanger mounts are on now is inside of the tube mouted to the truck. Triple stiched outside and much as humanly possible inside. The hangers on front are triple stitched also. So im not going to worry about my front hanger mount, ever. And as for the shackles, if they ever bend twist or break. Ill build a hanger just like the rear.

got the ignition and everything hooked up and got it running. put'er in gear and let the shafts spin and it didnt hit anywheres. so i didnt have to shave nutten im happy about that. but all i have left to do it hook up my steering just waiting on my orbital valve...the only bad thing about today running it i found that my water pump is leaking from the weep valve on the bottom of it  :'( so i gotta change that before its out. and take out all or most of my unwanted/needed wires under the dash.

Yea i was... Then my hydrolic steering started acting up and i looked into it... My orbtal valve took a p00 on me at the wrong time!!!! Its pressuring the left and right side at the same time so now its like i have manual steering... So long story short i was ready, but im not gunna make it with the truck. Prolly just go watch now....

got the new orbital valve in the other day, got it in the truck and steers with just my pinkey finger lol...took it out to the woods and the pasture and it treated it like nothing was nothing there, even tried to get it stuck but wouldn't do it  :P but i found even my 350 timed retarded can still spin the tires, gotta time it then see what she'll do then  :)

Stayed up till 4 last night got it all together... Woke up started it, timed it, lashed the valves, modified my valve covers and put a few other things on and was on the trailer at noon to jarmin.. As i was leaving i got a call and i only had enough time to play about an hour an a half... Figured out a few minor issues but other than that i cant complain about anything new ive put in it... Ill upload some videos later and some pictures

started it the other day and found it to be running like p00. thought my carb needed a rebuild, so i rebuilt it. still runs like p00...come to find that im sucking air between my heads and intake. ordered everything to fix so tomorrow night itll be good again... but today i finally put in a grill in that my dad said i could have if i could use it, and an electric fan he had for a spare for his jeep too  ;D i love the guy hes the best...... who says you cant use a grill from a 1977 k10 in an 1984 k10 loll

Been awhile so i figured id share what i did to fix my air problem. I bought a dart intake with 215 cc intake runners so it would fit over my heads 210 runners with ease. Runs like a champ now that it isnt starving fuel or sucking air from the wrong places. Havent had a chance to run it yet but i need to cause i leave the 31st for bootcamp!!!
