Title: bus law
Post by: big red on January 20, 2012, 10:46:58 PM
Ok i was going down a road with my mother following me, came to stop sign, i stopped and a bus pulled up on the corner to my right, turned on its lights and sat there.. I had my blinker on to go left, so i figured I was not passing it i could go as no kids where moving yet and I was not going to pass the bus. My mother says i broke the law, and i looked it up online theres nothing about stop signs just "stop and go signals". Whos right??

If you were within 50 ft you broke the law, if not you didn't.

your better off just waiting a min when kids are involved       and the bus stop should be moved a little if this is a every day stop.    in the morning when kids are getting on you dont know where there coming from to get there.     you may be right but was it the safest or best play to take.

Not supposed to pass buses period, if they are slowing down or stopped to drop kids off you are supported to stop and wait. I dont know if this is Law or not, just coming from a common sense point of view.
In the end is the argument worth the minute extra you would have had to wait?

Stop. When the sign is extended and the lights are on, you stop, period. Dont matter which way youre goin - if you can see it you stop.

i think u guys r missing the point did he break law or not? its whether mom is right or should he have stopped and waited ethically and moraly says yes, but as the law is written if he is turning away from the bus from a stated distance he does not need to abide by sign DO I AGREE THAT HE SHOULD HAVE WAITED YES !!!

Question:  When do I have to stop for a school bus with red overhead flashing lights?

Answer:  MCL 257.682 states "The driver of a vehicle overtaking or meeting a school bus which has stopped and is displaying 2 alternately flashing red lights located at the same level shall bring the vehicle to a full stop not less than 20 feet from the school bus and shall not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or the visual signals are no longer actuated."

The only exceptions are;

Where the roadway is divided by a physical barrier or interviening space such as a median or boulevard.
When direct by a police officer.
When at an intersection controlled by a stop-and-go signal, however the driver must slow to a reasonable and safe speed no greater than 10 miles-per-hour.

Laws are up to each Cops interputation.
You could ask 3 different Cops and get 3 different answers.

You may never know, unless you do it again with a Cop watching.

That's funny and true. I'm big on stoppin for buses (as I hated drivers runnin the light and once almost hit my sis) but as he says the bus was to his right............. (---->>>) and he was making a left (<<----)if I read that correctly. Without reading the law I would say HE is right ONLY if the bus was NOT completely at the intersection.  Regardless the speed should never be over 5 MPH and the yellows are simply a warning or caution (just like at a red light) that the reds are about to activate.  And always triple check for kids.               <----my opinion
