Title: Semi Trucks
Post by: old school truck dude on February 07, 2012, 12:24:20 AM
Im going back to the truck shop and its a fleet service with 16 semis and some trailers. Where is a good place for up-to-date info on the rigs of today? What all sorts of wierd crap have they put on them? I will be able to send these out for major repairs, but I would also like to fix all that I can in the shop. Any crazy new tools that I'll need? Any info will be greatly appreciated!  ;D

Yep. Computer control. You can check all the major systems from an off-board computer. Even turn on lights, wipers, etc etc from the shop computer to make sure the systems are functioning properly.

And if that isn't enough to get you into school, seeing all the new emissions controls will make you think otherwise. There is so much more happening on Class 8 rigs now than there was only 5 years ago . . .

Regeneration, catalysts, air conditioners that run off the batteries to lower fuel usage, and Internationals have a thing where the lights flash, blink, turn on brake lights, turn signals, and even honk the city horn to help with pretrips. I have talk to guys in different shops and they ALL, say the same thing, they are getting harder and more complicated to work on. More stuff and less room to work with.

Yup, what they said..

we just went full CNG (compressed natural gas) for fuel..
talk about a paridigm change... I have diesels with spark plugs!!!!

DEF -- here's ironic.. I used to send the new guys after exhaust fluid, just to see if they'd go.. (ya know, go get me a bolt stretcher!)
now I gotta send them after it!!  DEF = yea, diesel exhaust fluid.. bout' $12 a gallon.

EGR system upgrades have really increased since 04' exhaust emission standards.. ours are now "cooled" systems.

Disk brake systems are starting to arrive

I decided not to stay there at that shop. I still have my regular job because I used a couple vacation days to try it out. It was a horrible mess and the boss was very high-strung. They were disappointed at my leaving and I was too, but there wasnt even a friggin bathroom there!! No drinkin water either!! I didnt think I needed to ask these kinds of questions, ya know?? There was lots more way wrong with this place, but who cares.. I hope I get paid ==roll

Most of these trucks were mid-late 90s, they didnt really have too much crap on them although I know some of them got computers in them. For this job that sort of high-tech stuff would have been sent out along with any heavy line stuff such as the clutches that have to have the motor slid forward and stuff like that.. They didnt have ANYTHING to work with there so I said  ==bye
