so Ive been fighting this for few days now.. have the motor siting on the frame and trying to start it..
i guess my main question is can part a starter go out and make it roll slow..??or do they just quit
i took this starter out of my truck because i got a better one that one seemed little weak but started the truck..
now with it on the stand set up the starter just don't want to roll... i mean i don't understand got bigger cables heck got so irritated tonight had the interstate battery with jumpers to the van and even put the charger directly on to the start terminal and it just barely turn around .. think it rolled 8 times in a row but sloe enough that its not doing a thing ....so im back to the starter?
thought when the starter went out it was out?
I've seen a few of them do that were they barely roll and its because the starter has not completely gone yet but its on its way

i was thinking that.. kinda got in an argument at auto store tonight when they tested it good..but it had no load for say so ya it will spin fast
sounds like there might be a short in the starter.... do a voltage drop test, hook up volt meter and check battery voltage 12v and then while cracking see what voltage is on battery. should drop to around 10v.
if any lower than 9v
1) Bad starter
2) Bad battery, maybe a bad cell
3) Bad cable(s)
double check to make sure your getting a good ground, but sounds like bad starter to me :)
short in the starter?? might explained why the starter was smokin on a few of those rolls..
The reject (87 chevy) did that when the starter went bad, smoked a set of jumper cables too.
Borrow a starter from someone and try it...

yea if its smokin its toasted lol time for a new one :)
i'll grab ya a couple starters to try from the shop tomarrow bubba
I had 2 starters for a 6.2 diesel swapped them back n forth added batterys and a jump vehicle still would barely turn over, it would go about 10 times around and stop n smoke. Tried different wires and everything. Finally took both starters upto autozone and found out they were bad. New starter cranks it right over with 1 gauge wire ==roll
