got my 88 k5
adding:
10/14bolt axles
built BBC
(40'' currently) could go to 42''
th400
(208 tcase currently)
i do drive this truck daily, but id like the touque.
4.10s or 4.56??
Get rid of the 10bolt and get a d60, and try to find one witth 4.56 if u have 40s and street it. I have 4.10s and 40s and snapped my 10bolt every trip out. But the 40s, and 4:10s are good on the road, but I have overdrive too. With overdrive, I wouldn't personally go over 4.88. With only a 3speed u may wanna keep 4.10, or 4.56 max
i was thinking 4.56
but i wanted to keep front ground clearance with the 10 bolt. but yes, i have broken my fair share of axles. id like to get a set of 14bolts FF
i do have a good set of 10 bolts if anyone wants to trade? i was told that they were dana 44s, but i could not find the tag to prove so

stupid ? why do you want a set of 14 bolts when you only need one rear. just something to think about i tried going your route before and broke the front all the time. i would save your money and get a 60
No such thing as a set of 14bolts. 14boltff is a REAR axle.

x2 unless you make one :) I would go 4.56s! but if you dd/ play with it your going to get sick of that 10 bolt fast! bog saterday fix sunday hope to get to work monday dont sound like fun to me lol
X2. Gotta be tough if u wanna drive it home from the bog

you know what i mean
what im getting at is just 1 ton axles
and does anyone have axles they are looking to get rid of?
just sold a set of 4.56 one tons... I got the 4.10 set in my truck but dont really wanna sell them but if I did I would have to get $1600
if i go to the scrap yard and get axles, how can i tell the gearing?
and what vehicals had 60s in them that would fit my 88' with minor modifications.
Good luck finding one ton fronts at the scrap yard. Don't happen too often. You'll want chevy or older dodge axles. Both will "bolt"in, but the chevy will bolt in easier

i know just the yard. its one of the biggest iver ever seen. he has everything. is there a difference between dodge and chevy axles?
Spring perchs are 1/2 inch off on each side.. but u can streatch everything over to bolt em in. But I think steering may be diff, not sure
A good gear ratio formula is tire diameter x .12 (40x.12=4.80).So a 4.88 gear

what is the .12?
and where did the formula come from?
4:56 if your driving it on road also
Interco tire website is where the formula came from, they have alot of gear ratio info on there.
10 bolt is round cover danas have round cover with straight sides

this is a good referance.
heres a formula for you. old tire size divided by new tire size x current gear ratio will give you the new desirable ratio to match your tires. i used this when i did up my bronco. i over geared a little because im gonna switch to 37s. but the 4.88 gears with 35s make my lil 302 seem much larger

That didn't work for me.
Current tire. 40"
Old tire: 35"
Current gear ratio: 3.73
it comes out to a 4.26 ratio so if you want to go for performance go with 4.56 gears a lil less power more mileage go with 4.11s . 40 divided by 35 x 3.73 = 4.26 < this ratio would get you back to stock performance with 40in tires
with my bronco i wanted 37s. so 37<new tire / 31 <old tire x 3.55 ratio gave me 4.23 ratio so i went 4.88s to get a lil more performance since its mainly a trail/bog truck
Yea I went by the chart I posted above, I'm gunna go 488 or higher. 4.56 min.
what type of tires are the 40s? it plays apart on what gears to use. for playing in the mud, not on the road as much. (boggers, tsl, ground hogs) a friend had chevy with mild 454,350trans,208, 410gears, 40 boggers on all 4. and then he thought the truck would do better with 456 gears, but the truck was slower. not enough wheels speed with 456.
I got like 850 hp. Th 400 trans. 208 case. 40" hawgs

for play 4.10s for street4.10s lol thats a ton of power I ran 44 cut hawgs 4.56s 350 241 500 dynoed hp 2nd in the mud
Jthomas you are thanking the wrong way. if your motor is that much, you need spin the tires faster not rpm. that kind of power use less gears like 373 or 410.

I'm not looking to race it or spin the tires that fast. I want torque for trails and what not.
850 hp for trails I think may be over kill but I still bet 4.10s would work fine with that much power! a true 850hp is ALOT of power.. with ground hawgs you may end up in hi range!

I'm a Thomas. We do p00 overkill. This is also my DD.
this post needs to be delete. to much crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that dose not make sence. ( dose not matter what brand you are talking about gas in and exhaust that makes power) you start with 10 bolt front end. then 850hp motor in Daily drive. Just my 2 cents!!!!

Power and use are completly relevant in choosing the correct gear ratio.
I have a dodge 6o front, bolts in, I went crossover steering but stock steering will work

Great thanks. Will I have to change the pitman arm?
Good luck with the little axles and high hp.

1 tons are small?
Nevermind. I didn't read well enuff. Thought u had a 10bolt loll
But 850hp and the way u are talking about using this thing for is gonna be way overkill. You won't be doing any trail riding with 850hp.
