Tryin to replace the upper ball joint on the passenger side of my brothers 1987 k20 and it's really starting to tick me off.
Have everything off, even axle shafts. To the point where I would use that ball joint press I rented from auto zone to remove the ball joint but it's not working. I crank on the press till it won't go anymore and that ball joint has not budged. Man has it got me pi$$ed off. Can someone give me some help?
access to torch?
is this straight axle. if so you need to take out the bottom ball joint if you want to use the press. top ball joint comes out the top. if I was doing this i would replace the bottom ball joint to.

Yes it's a strait axle but I can promise you the top one doesn't come out the top. You have to get the top one out first before you can get to the bottom with the clamp

Nvm you are 100% right. I figured out what step I was skipping. Thanks for your help
Now as for that threaded sleeve that is around the top of the upper ball joint. Looks like it needs a special socket with 4 prongs sticking off. Is that something I could pick up at a autozone?
u speaking of the ball joint or just before the axle shafts?
Ball joint, little sleeve that goes around the top threaded part
i would thank so that thay should have one. but i would not touch it, just put it back together, if you have movement up and down then adjust it.{ Make sure it turns}
if your talking about the end where the grease zerk is thats not supposed to come off, if it did take it back and get a new one, if your talking about the the end where the castle nut threads on, there is no special tool needed just what ever socket fits, tighten it down and put your cotter pin in :)
he is talking about perloading the ball joint not bolting the spindle up. its in on the up part of c of the axle that ball joint goes in.
just leave that 4 prong in there, you dont have to change it. Ive only HAD to change 1 in about 100 Ive done
