what are some thing to look for when looking at a used motor. need to put a new motor in the jeep and 258 seem to be prety cheep for used ones just wondering what you look for when you cant hear it run. thanks
id check the oil to see how it looks. see if you can roll the motor over by hand. maybe check the plugs also.
check the oil, feel how it rolls over, and with the plugs out roll it back and forth feel for any rods that might be sloppy... and if you cantake the pan off and look at the bottem
++peace just buy it ,slap it in and hammer down ++peace ==jk

X2
Lol sounds good but i would like to have it last till i get the parts together to put the 350 in
check oil, dont just look at at, smell it and see if it smells burnt, rub some between your finger and thumb and feel for grit or metal shavings. wipe dipstick clean and look at it for any discoloration in the metal, (sign that it overheated or was was run real low on oil)
pull the spark plugs and look at em if there black its running rich, oily its burnin oil, white its runnin real lean, it should be a nice dark tan color.
also if possible bring a compression tester.
Buy one from someone with a good reputation and check it over good. I know Jeep guy that might have one ready to go. PM me if interested in getting ahold of him. If he says its good, its good or he will give you another one till it is.
Ok i pm you later i am at work and using my phone he has 4.2 258 not 4.0

Umm actually both and a few AMC v-8's, 4 cylinders probably too. Well let me say he usually has at least 1 ready to go of each. He has a chit ton of Jeep parts.
another thing to look for is leaks. usually if its an oily greasy mess it wasnt ever very well taken care of. and something i always look for is rtv/silicon. the way i see it is if someone took the time to tear it apart but not put it back correctly like buying new gaskets/ seals they probly never took very good care of it. but thats just my $.02
i usually check the oil filler cap also and if theres any milky looki too it i get learry
ok i wrote this down when i go look at the motor tomorrow i check it out thanks for all the advice

x2 first thing i check.. yellow goo stay away!
if the oil is new.. filter too..
coolant perfect n' up to snuff..
be careful.. someones coverin somethin' up
especially if the motor is crap covered.
in other words, if the inside is pretty..
n' the outside's nasty.. use caution.
