Michigan motorcyclists can take their helmets off.
Governor Rick Snyder signed a bill into law Thursday that gives them the option whether to wear helmets when they ride or not.
6 News Capital Correspondent Tim Skubick reported on the governor's plans to sign the bill several weeks ago.
According to a press release from the governor's office, Michigan becomes the 31st state to give riders the choice.
There is a catch: riders without helmets have to be at least 21-years-old, have additional insurance, and pass a motorcycle safety course or have been riding for at least two years.
The same goes for passengers without helmets: they must be at least 21 and have have additional insurance, as well.
"While many motorcyclists will continue to wear helmets, those who choose not to deserve the latitude to make their own informed judgments as long as they meet the requirements of this new law," Snyder said in the release.
Snyder signed the new law over the objections of many people in the medical community, who fear the law more severe head and brain injuries. But rider advocates are celebrating.
"I want to extend our gratitude to all of the legislative officials and Governor Rick Snyder who courageously supported freedom in the face of an onslaught of baseless and emotional arguments perpetuated by our opponents," said Vince Consiglio, president of American Bikers Aiming Toward Education of Michigan in a press release.
Similar bills have passed one body of the legislature or another for years, but former governor Jennifer Granholm would not approve the bills.
6 News will have more on this story coming up tonight at 6pm.

This is an attorney for injured bikers... seems like it will cost everyone in the long run, not just the ones riding.
does it work for go-karts?

im thinking some way shap or form the state has a back up plane to make money off this....well not this go's in effect lets p00 can the seat belt law
Those laws are put in effect to keep from 1 person from having to pay for anothers bills. For example, Why should i have to pay your medical bills? I dont even ride. 20k gets spent pretty fast at a hospital. Who will make up that extra cost to pay those estimated 127 incapacitating injuries? Why should my premiums go up to accomodate your lack of safety? I am totally for making your own choices for oneself aslong as it doesnt infringe on my life.
IMO if you dont want to wear a helmet/seatbelt, you should be issued a card. No helmet, no payout. Which in turn means my rates stay low, as I am a good driver.
Not pointed at you woody, just trying to explain it from my point of view. ++peace

i dont remember, i was born in 85, well after the seatbelt laws! As time goes on, things change. a lot more rules, fees, and penalties. corruption and greed doesn't help either...
I go with bigdaddy!!!!!
I for one am glad they finaly made it my choice. I personaly won't be wearing a helmet as I don't think they do all the good theysaid they did. As for the insurance if you are going to byTch about the people that don't wear a helmet you have to pay for because usualy somebody cuts them off, runs them over why not byTch about the people who smoke? They are the reason all our medical costs are so high. Or byTch about all the fat people they ain't heathy and are costing us all more money for their medical issues?

I didnt start driving till 03, and i always wear my seatbelt. Not only because its the law, it might save my life someday. Easier for me to go with the flow then get pulled over and harassed.
I still wear my helmet, don't think my brains make good road paint...
